Dmac730 -> Sim flights, when will I see reults? (5/7/2008 1:48:00 AM)

I just started my simulator training and so far with over 50 flights I've had over 50 crashes. I heard that sim training works wonders and I'm not rushing things but wondering how much time others used the sim before seeing results. I'm hoping with in a month or so I can tackle real flight training with an instructor and a Sig LT-40.

How are you flying, what kinda plane are you flying, and what are you doing when crashing? I took the lessons an instructor would have you do IRL and did them on the sim for at least a half an hour a night. Dont get on and treat it like a computer game and fly around all crazy. My first day out to the field after 3-4 months sim time (I woulda been ready imo at 2 months but it was over the winter) I was able to take off fly the circuit and land with no more then a couple instructions from the guys helping me out. I tried learning several years ago without a sim and had bad results. Even with an instructor I kept doing enough damage each trip out to make the next trip take to long and I could never get in enough stick time to get the muscle memory down. This time the muscle memory was pre learned and all that I really need to do was learn to adjust for perspective and the differences of flying IRL. IMO when you dont need to think about which way to move the sticks anymore then you are ready to hit the field. Its a good idea to talk to an instructor before and during your sim training though just like you would IRL so you are not learning bad habbits on the sim.

I'm pretty much just flying the pattern like IRL. I have 22 years in the Navy as a Flight Engineer(no stick time) So I understand aerodynamics but R/C is a whole new world. I'm using Realflight G2 and find the most difficult part in keeping my reference to the runway. It sure is a great sim though.

The sim is good to get your fingers working but there is no substitute to real world r/c flying. Get an instructor with a buddy cord, let them take off and hand it over to you. This is a very safe way to learn to fly and if you get in trouble the instructor can take over.

That's the biggest problem with sims, staying oriented to the ground and field. Once you get actual trainer time, the sim may help that a little but not really the other way around. I find the sim helps me with basic stick movements and thumb memory.
