Hi all,

Well, after logging about 30 packs now through my B400, it finally happened, a crash, but not quite like I had imagined my first crash...

After a beautiful flight, the best flight I have had to date, the battery was about a minute from the end...and I brought her back into get ready for the next flight. I landed it about 5 feet away...and decided to practice smooth take offs and landings for the last 45 seconds of the pack. Well, I'm still not sure exacty what happened, but when I lifted off, I think I somehow lost orientation (not used to looking almost directly down on the heli?), and managed to fly the B400 straight into my left leg!!

WHACK !! OUCH !! Broke one of the blades clean in two...and bent some stuff....didn't do the rest of the heli a bit of good either...blades, main gear stripped, main shaft bent, feathering shaft bent, flybar bent... not to mention a HUGE black and blue welt on my left shin!!

I still haven't figured out what sustained the most damage...my leg, the heli, or my pride !!

Anyways, was out to the LHS rounding up parts...this will be my first crash repair...so I probably will be posting some questions...

Fortunately, there was no one around to see the incident !! LOL

Well, now I have confessed to the whole world !!

I feel like an idiot....but I'll tell ya what....I sure do have a new found respect for those rotor blades now !!!

Take care all, and be careful !!

Glenn

Glenn,

I hope you weren't hurt that bad. You were doing so good on the B400. I have seen pictures of other people getting hit by their helicopter and with a few close calls of my own I try and stay away from my helicopters. I hope you get the B400 up and heal soon.

Nick

Hey, if no one saw it and it wasn't on film - it never happened! Hope your leg is feeling better and that you get your B400 up and flying sooner than later.

Ouch nasty one. I try to limit my heli to crashing into the ground. Just destroyed it yesterday and broke all kinds of things, frame, 3 Hitec servos, blades, etc.

Hey guys,

Thanks for everyone's support !! My leg will be fine, the swelling is gone, and I managed to locate some main shafts, so I'll be rebuilding tonight...kinda funny, I didn't notice the pain, AT FIRST...it took a little while after the intial shock...

My pride will heal in time, as mentioned...and like Coyote said, it's bound to happen sooner or later...

Lesson well learned I guess...the hard way, the way I usually do... lol

Can't wait to get it back in the air, that flight just prior to the "crash" was my best ever, really gaining some confidence....but not TOO MUCH confidence !!

Thanks again so much, you all are a great bunch of guys, I appreciate the kind words...

Ouch xyster, looks like a nasty one! Hope you can get it rebuilt and flying soon !!

Can't wait to get off work and begin the rebuild....watch for some questions coming soon...actually I found a very good website, B400repair.com I think it is, and it outlines the main shaft and main gear, feathering shaft replacement quite well...so we'll see how I do...

Happy flying all !!!

Glenn

Not that it would have helped in this case, but you need to learn to use the throttle cut off.

Put the Throttle Hold in place anytime your focus is not 100% on the heli, this includes the Oh crap moment before it hits something or you. In that fatal moment you are thinking about the crash and not getting out of the crash and this fits into the not paying 100% attention dept.

The throttle cut will save many many parts as you won't have thrust when it actually does hit something. I'd also learn how to autorotate, this is something I'm working on now, some people use this to land instead of just throttling down. It's good practice and it's actually a touch safer for the bird once you know how to do it.

Hope that helps. I've started to learn all of this myself, so looking at self in the mirror while saying all of this.

Hey Nick,

Nah, my leg is fine, it's just bruised a bit at this point, barely even notice it... Got most of my parts rounded up to put the B400 back together, except for the very difficult to find feathering shafts, which I have (thank goodness) had on order since Sunday, they should be here tomorrow. so I'll finish up. The main gear and shaft were a piece of cake....but the feathering shaft is a bit more involved, I"m going to have to be careful and take my time, there are alot of little washers, orings, thrust bearings, etc in there to pay attention to....

I flew the CPP today, ran 4 packs through it, with no training gear! I think I am ready to retire the training gear on the CPP! I didn't even have a close call with it....it's flying pretty well, and I feel like I am getting "over the hump" as far as hovering in all aspects, I am doing much better now with side in, and nose in, they are not presenting the issues that they used to... I can stay very relaxed flying the CPP now...

Hopefully, I get the feathering shafts tomorrow, and can finish the rebuild tomorrow night, so I'll be good for the weekend ! I just hope the B400 flies as good as it was before the crash!

Take care, adn thanks for the kind words..

Glenn

Congrats on the CP Pro. I am still waiting for the LHS to get a tail motor in. Then I tried a technique that I read, but it only works with the bell hiller setup and I am experimenting with the hiller setup. And that made my pitch reversed. I switched over to the stock transmitter because it was simple and I had the best experience flying. Then I broke the antenna. Right now the brushless motor is too much power for my tail, but the tail motor went out so I don't know how well it will do so I went back to the brushed motor. After one of my full rebuilds on the Belt CP it flew better than it did before. I hope the same happens to you. Sunday I got a video of me flying my Belt CP, but I don't have audio so I will have to work on that. Then I finally was able to fly my Hobbyzone Super CUB. That was a lot of fun, but it was hard to turn without ailerons. Let us know how the B400 turns out.

Nick

Hey Nick,

Good to see you are getting the CPP back out to play...hopefully you will get a tail motor for it soon. I am still flying mine on a daily basis, with no training gear. I think my tail motor is slowly dying again, and I still have a little bit of tail wagging going on, but it's very flyable, and great practice. Are you reverting your CPP back to hiller only mixing? I would be curious how you make out with that... I never cared for my stock radio setup on the CPP, I had a few glitches with mine, none too serious, but kinda sucks...hope you can get a new antenna!

That's great news on the Belt CP, good work! I completed the B400 rebuild tonight, so it's going to get a test flight tomorrow...and we'll see how well I did my job! Thank goodness I ordered the feathering spindles when I did, otherwise the B400 would be grounded right now !! They are all but impossible to find right now... I've been considering one of the stripped B400's on eBay, if just for spare parts...they are going for like $119 + shipping. I hate not being able to fly, and/or get parts!

Hey, I want to see the Belt CP video, audio or not! Let us know when you post it!

Well, I'll post the B400 repair results in about 24 hours!

Take care,

Glenn

Glenn,

I put the hiller set up on a few months ago. I didn't need the fast response from the bell hiller set up, because I like to fly scale with that helicopter. I only broke the top part of the antenna and I kind of put it back together. I know how it feels to wait on parts and not be able to fly. I had some glitches on my CX radio, but I haven't noticed it on the CP Pro's. I am sure you put it back together just fine, but I always double check bolt tightness and servo direction before the first flight after a rebuild. Then I hover really close to the ground just in case I missed something. Then after that flight I know wether or not it will be fine and I am not so nervous. It was kind of hard to fly the Belt CP because it was very windy, but it still was worth it. I wish I tapped me flying my Super CUB. I always crashed that airplane in the first few seconds because I was afraid of hitting something. Then when I went to a big open field it was very easy to fly. I actually had my videos up on Youtube, but once I noticed there was no audio I deleted them.
