Hi I just purchased 2 tenergy 4200mah from allbattery. I also have there universal smart charger. I have a old school viper electric boat, that I put a 27 turn trinity motor, duratrax reverse esc, stock prop and no binding in the driveline. I put them on the charger they seem to charge fine and the green led came on. check the volts they were 8.40 on the first battery and 8.45 on the second. temp checked them while charging and they only got to 90 degrees. I went to run them for the first time seem to run good at first but the boat slowed just a little brought it back in to see if there was any thing on the prop nothing. Checked the temp of the motor and it was close to 250 degrees, they first battery pack was 150 degrees, then I let it cool and put the other battery in and the heat sink and the label melted off of one battery cell only and it was 260 degrees the rest were alot lower. hopefully someone will know if I did something or the batteries are the problem or the motor not really sure

Dave

Never fast charge a new battery. Always trickle charge several times to condition battery. Don't expect good results untill after 10 cycles. A good charger will tell you the capacity (TEKIN 112c charger). This is all I use 15% extra capacity every time.

Is 1.9a fast charging. Because that is what I charged it at. I hope I didn't ruin the battery packs.

It seems that your second battery has a imbalanced or weak/bad cell.

wow the motor got to 250? It may need a tune up. Try cleaning the motor and oil the bearings/bushings.
Sounds like the motors yanking alot of amps and that batts cant handle it.
Tenergys have a bad rep to begin with but it sounds like it may be the motor.

Ya but 250. Maybe gearing or binding. I dont know jack about boats. But if theres a gear mesh it may be to tight. It sounds like the motor is straining somewhere.

The batts would have gotten hot but the motor shouldnt have gotten that hot. Even if that batts where junk I dont think that theyd cause the motor to get so hot. If anything it would have ran coooler because its not getting all the amps it needs from the batts if the had enough resistance to cause heat.

I had a bad battery pack and my motor would run nice and cool with it.

Well, I think I found the problem. The stock prop was to much for the motor to handle. I think a smaller prop will do the trick.

Yeah thats seems more like the problem. I know with RC cars if the motor gets that hot then its the gearing,But i wasnt sure how that worked in a boat.

You never fixed the real problem. Never FAST charge a new battery. You must first cycle it to get the best preformance.

ok what should I charge it at, I only have the universal smart charger from tenergy, it charges at .09a or 1.8a. It took about 2 plus hours to charge before I ran it. Also how do I need to cycle them?

Go with the lower setting for the first several charges. After about 3-5 times, you can go up to the 1.8A setting.

Only 2 hours on the 1.8A setting for a 4200mAh battery is a problem. At that rate and time your pack is only accepting 3600mAh, and due to losses in charging it is likely holding 3000mAh give or take. That's a lot lower than 4200. I guess if this is the first charge cycle it may take a while to get up to full capacity, so keep your eyes open for the next few charges. It should probably take about 2.5 hours at 1.8A.

That one pack with the super hot cell is way out of balance or that cell is bad. Run the boat easy for a few cycles so you don't damage your cells. Let them come up to full strength before really stressing them. It would really be best if you could charge using the charger you have and then do a "poor man's balancing" by hooking the pack to a 300-400mA DC wal wart supply for a few hours after that to top off all the cells. do this a few times, and if that cell still heats up it is bad.
