I lost the VQ Models 60 size Hurricane on its third flight. I was still trying to get the control throws ect adjusted. Normal take off, retracted the gear and had just turned to downwind and throttled back, there was a pop and the engine quite. I thought it was going the land in the tall grass next to the runway but the plane glided past that, accross the end of the runway and touched down on a small dirt embankment by a drainage ditch doing major damage to the plane. With the gear and flaps up it is a slick plane and glided a lot further than I expected. Powered by a Thunder Tiger 91 FS. Post crash inspection show the prop nut had come loose. It had a brass heavy hub on it and I had tightened it as far as I dared without stripping it.

Since all the hardware survived, engine, radio, servos, robarts etc. I ordered another VQ Hurricane. Kit went together quicker since I had just done the other. Interestingly the new one came out much lighter thant the first and I didn't have to add near as much weight in the nose to get it to balance. The takeoff and landing speed of the first one was quite high due to its heavy weight, which didn't help in the engine out landing. Haven't flow the new one yet, but it should do better because it is lighter. Don't know the reason, mayby lighter less dense wood. ??

Not sure about using a heavy hub on a four stroke. Maybe I should use locktight. Don't want this to happen again. Used one for years on an OS 91 and never had this happen.

Usually it is caused by the engine going lean causing a backfire making the nut come loose. don't know if this is what happened to yours but have seen it many times over with a 4 stroke of many brands.

Unexpected glide hit me with my VQ Bf 109. I too had an engine failure, and did a quick turn into the wind, lined up at about 5 feet at the end of the runway, and she stayed at five feet all the way down and about 60 yards past the other end of the runway. Damage to my 109 was minor. Wingtips needed replacement. She wasn't as pretty afterward, but has been my everyday flyer every since.

That IS interesting.

The Electric guys over at RCGroups are reporting a AUW of 9+lbs. Some have added nearly 1lb of weight to get the model to balance!

Is there any way you could weigh your model, just for giggles to offer as a comparirion to what the electric jobs weigh?

Best of luck on your 2nd Hurricane, mine is still sitting in the box.

Did you have the thin nut under the heavy hub that Higley makes for this application?
