It is hard to keep my mouth shut in the local Hobbytown. Some of the advice and answers given to customers is scary. Don't get me wrong, a couple guys are really good but the others have probably driven more people away from the hobby than they've helped out. For instance, one guy asked about the Sig-ment glue (similar to ambroid). He got told it was only for Sig kits and they don't carry those. Apparently it is for some special material Sig has? Come on ... Also, they carry Sig and can get anything you want from them. Another guy was new to planes and they were trying to steer him toward electric. He saud he wanted "gas" They told the guy that "you have to fly that at an "airport" so you want electric instead".They should have given the guy our club information or info on the Madera club and sold him a Nice RTF trainer kit on the shelf. Another time, a woman came in saying her husband was laid up after an injury and he had always wanted to build an RC plane. She was going to surprise him with a kit ot build while he was recovering. They showed here some foamies but she insisted he wanted to build a wood plane. The showed her some built up ARF's but she kept trying to explain that her husband wanted to build a plane from wood parts. Finally they told here that those types of planes aren't available. She got disgusted and left. Funny thing is, they have ordered several kits for me in the past. I tried to catch her in the parking lot and direct her to the Tower web site but she left to quickly. Also, sinced she wasn't bad looking and actually supported her husband's desire to fly RC, I wanted to see if she had a single sister.

The local hobby shop has been closed for 2 weeks and I sure miss him. I was wondering how many people have a shop close by or do you just use tower to order your parts. I guess its really true you dont miss the water untill the well is dry.

Maybe you should ask all the guys in the "Do you haggle over prices at your LHS" thread.

Chuck, I know the store well. I feel for you. Should I tell tails about the shop in Merced?? No, that would just make me sound bitter and unless you ever tried to get anything there no one would beleave it anyway.
Do I haggle over the price?? You bet, if the shop is A distributor for someone like Horizon then I don't want to see A mark up on A Horizon product that I buy from them. Just as easy to pick up the phone and get it from the main store. Just this week I ordered A new engine from my LHS, 300 magic beans plus I ordered A few parts just because I needed them, same price as if I mail ordered. That's very good service and I buy from them all the time.

I have 2 LHS's, and I'm about to write them both off. Every time I need something, they don't have it, but are more than happy to get it for me. (Good, right....wrong!!) They promise to deliver the part within 4 days, and it's never in on time, or don't get it due to out of stock at Horizon Hobby. So...wait...if you have to order from Horizon, why can't I just order it myself, and get the tracking info, and then it's at my door.

Recently asked for a exhaust extention (for an Evolution .46 motor)- they have two on order, and it will be in on Monday. (They told me this on Tuesday). I ordered a TF Corsair G.E. on Tuesday from Towerhobbies - came in on Thursday - standard shipping, and got it cheaper than they could have gotten it from Horizon. (Delivery times from internet stores is quicker and faster than the LHS)

I used to think - order from a local vendor, support the local market - but it's almost not worth it any more.

There are several LHS in my area, however most of them cater to the R/C beginner or R/C cars, etc. There is one shop located 50 miles from me that specializes in high end R/C items but they are approx 15% more expensive than Tower or Horizon. It all depends on whether I want to pay tax or shipping. Plus, with today's gas prices I don't take too many long trips in the car anymore, so I've been ordering mail order lately.

Best,
Brian

There is a Hobby Town close by, but all they do is cars and ARFs. I've seen only one kit there, a PT-40, and since I'm a builder I only get hardware and wood from there. The owner has been in the hobby for years, and I get the feeling that he only carries the ARFs because they sell. He's a good source of info so I try to shop there, but there just isn't much kit selection these days...

There is a LHS near here; he doesn't carry much, and his prices are ridiculous, but I try to give him a shot before I order anything from Tower. Amazingly his fuel prices were just about above normal, so I've been buying fuel from him. It's always good to keep money in your community whenever possible, of course as long as it doesn't make you feel violated afterwards!
