I see a couple of ads selling 3S ( 11.1Volt) packs suitable for transmiitters - which are normally 9.6V ...Can any of you eleccy specialist types tell me if the TX can actaully handle the voltage from a 3s Lipo battery wihtout some minor form of voltage regulation - or does the TX just draw the current it needs and its not that important that the Lipo is of higher Voltage output than the std 9.6v packs ?
Thanks

Welll that depends......

On some systems the raw battery voltage is used to power the RF Amplifier and all the logic circuits are driven from a regulated 5V line. This means that the regulator was dropping 4.6V nominal but now is having to drop 6.1V. This extra voltage is converted into heat, so if the manufacturer skimped on the regulator then this additional heat could cause the regulator to fail prematurely.

On other systems ( Spektrum & JR 2.4 GHz), the RF section is run from a regulated 3.3 V line. So now this reg has to drop 7.8 V instead of 6.3V, the logic regulator is still as above.

So basically, if the designers put in decent regulators capable of handling excess voltage, it should be okay

I have a hard time understanding WHY they're making lipo tx packs. You can get nimh packs, that we know will work, with 2500+ mah capacity.

Unless a 'factory rep' for my brand posts a definitive positive answer I would not consider using a 11 volt pack. Sure, there will be replies of "I've been usiung it in my xyz for years with no problems." None of those people are going to buy you a new radio if your xyz goes up in smoke.

I have had nothing but disappointment and frustration with NiMh Tx battery packs. Perhaps I have not been buying Tx packs from the right source, but I never seem to get the rated performance out of NiMh Tx packs. They seem to loose their charge in a short period of time requiring me to constantly be charging every few days. I tried following the manufacturer's directions and Forming the cells with three cycles at a low rate, but they still do not seem to hold their charge.

Another frustrating thing is that my chargers seem to False Peak with NiMh Tx packs. I will charge a 2500Mah pack at 700Mah and it will False Peak in 5 minutes, sometimes.

I am using Triton and Triton 2 chargers with the proper settings. I have two 9303 Tx's, one 8103, one Futaba 9c, and one Futaba 8AUPS.

All Tx's have 3cell LiPo 2500Mah packs and have been working fine with these packs for over a year. The charge seems to hold up for weeks, with regular use and charge time is only 1 hr or so.

I do not know why the NiMh Tx packs have been so unreliable since my JR NiMh receiver packs have held their charge normally.

I have switched to 2cell LiPo packs for my receivers, for lightness, and I have had no problems. LiPo's have held their charge much longer than NiMh.

you all fogetting 1 BIG issue!!!

yes you can get a TX lipo for all type of radios: JR,FUT.HITCK and so on

BUT!!!!!

if you change the normal NIMH to a LIPO you need to set anew configuration on your radio!!!

meaining, you net to do a new setup to the TX for LIPO-> max voltage, min voltage, alarm and so on.
moreover, your regular TX charger WILL NOT CHARGE A LIPO, you need to get the batt out of the TX and charge it OR to make a ne PL charger connector that goes from the LIPO charger to the radio!!!!

LIPO's are great, but you need to handle them very "gently" with extra caution!!!

I fly electrics as well as Gas, Glow, and Turbines. Since I like to fly Indoor Electrics, in the winter, I have all the gear I need to Charge and Maintain LiPos. I agree they need to be handled carefully. I use an FMA Cellpro 4S charger to balance and charge my TRUERC Tx LiPo packs via the PQ Balancing Tap on the batteries. They charge just like any other LiPo pack. I use an Astroflight 109 charger for my Lithium Ion Receiver packs as well as my Triton and Triton2 chargers.

Non of my transmitters have any settings, in the programming, for Battery Voltage. Perhaps there are some Tx's that have settings in the programming, but I have never seen that.

I am aware that JR does not recommend using LiPo Tx packs with their XP9303 radio. The companies that advertise and sell LiPo Tx packs, that I have spoken to, were confident that I could use LiPo packs, with the Tx's I own, without an additional Voltage Regulator. That does not mean that there is no risk. There are some newer Tx's that are being shipped with LiPo Tx packs.

Don't forget that a 9.8v battery charges to 11v anyways, so while it might not always be that high, it shouldn't be the case of an internal VR not being able to handle that voltage.

I've never heard of reseting voltage alarms either and you have to be careful not to leave it on or it will kill the lipo long before the LV alarm goes off.

That said, its nice to charge today and take it out tomorrow, next week, or August and know I have a fully charged battery.

Are you referring to the Service Manual or some kind of Service Menu that is hidden in the programming of the XP9303?

What procedure do you use to enter the Service Menu on an XP9303?

Could you also PM the procedure to me?

It seems odd that they warn in the manual that using LiPo's is not to be done and it will void your warranty if you do use them.

Perhaps if such a procedure exists, it would be a good idea to post the procedure here publicly . Thanks
