Hi all,

Well, I'm putting the B400 back together, and everything is going smooth, supposed to get the feathering shafts today...I was wondering what you guys think about putting some medium strength (blue, 242) loctite on the feathering shaft screws when reassembling?

One article in a heli magazine says to loctite everything that is metal to metal threads....and on the other hand, the B400 repair website is against it, stating that there is a risk of getting the loctite into the bearings and such...

I was thinking of putting a very small dab, with a toothpick or small screwdriver, so as not to get the loctite in the wrong places...

All I do know, is by looking at it, if the feathering shaft screw ever came out, so would the entire blade!! Not good!!

As always, I value your opinion, there is no substitute for experience...

Thanks,

Glenn

For sure you need to use locktite just remember alittle goes along way.
When applying locktite dont forget to shake it up.
The way i do it is I put a drop on the work bench and wick as little as possible into the first thread or two, Any more and it just goes where you do not want it. Not to mention when you need to pull it apart it becomes a ****.
anything metal to metal on a heli or airplane you need to use locktite.
One of the guys at our field had the motor and speed controler pull out because the lack of thread lock on the motor mount.
No one has ever found it and this was in a full size fia pattern ship. Over a 1000 bucks worth a gear just because he thought it was not nessary on an electric because of the reduced vibration.

Absolutely ! !

There is a hundred pounds plus of pull on those screws when flying, so if You WANT catastrophic failure with the blades flying for 2 city blocks; then don't lock-tite them.

Thanks guys,

I agree with you all, especially if one is careful in the application of the loctite, to make sure it doesn't end up in the bearings, etc. I just got done and used a dab of blue loctite on each of the feathering shaft screws. Everything seems fine.

Thanks again for the advice and tips!!

Glenn

I am going to be the odd man out but I have never, ever used loctite on my feathering shaft screws. Due to the amazing amount of fiddling i do and fussing loctite just isn't an option for me. I do use loctite on all my metal to meatal parts elsewhere but the feathering shaft.....nope.

I always use Loctite on the feathering shaft screws without problems.
It's always been my understanding that Loctite only hardens in the absence of air, like when it's in the threads of a screw surrounded by a nut.
If that is correct then it shouldn't harden on things like washers or bearings.
Please feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

I don't get enough flights between rebuilds to allow the screws to become loose! I would agree to loctite them. Just as Wolf said, a small drop on the workbench, then just dab the screw end in it and I run my fingers over it to clean it of the outside of the threads so it is only on the inside grooves. This keeps it off anything else.

Thats correct-But I would not use the "Blue"-The "Purple" (series #222) is designed for small fasteners like this-

I do, but only the smallest drop on the last two or so threads then very carefully insert it. Even doing it this way I mave managed to get a little on the bearings once, and you could tell cause the blade grip became very stiff.

The guys at the field say not to, as they are pulling them back out after nearly every outing anyways, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

the smallest trace of locktite on one thread is all u need.
man that looks like a crash in idle up... not to mention a slow hold hit when it went in.

An interesting update to this thread...RCU member JPEE told me that his recently purchased feathering spindles had a label stating to use loctite on the package...maybe he will elaborate for us on this...

The ones I just got might be older stock, they did not have a label stating to use loctite? Anyone else come across this yet?

I will also have to do some research on the purple (#222) loctite mentioned earlier...I didn't know that existed...

Well, more food for thought, anyways!

Every now and then We get a thread at Helifreak on the T-REX 450 forum that the Author wonders why on earth the blades just exploded off the heli.

The screws coming out is why.
