Sure this has been asked a thousand times (sorry), and I don't want to start any arguments, but...

I've just built an Avistar with an OS .46 AX engine and a JR Quattro transmitter.

I'd like to buy a good flight simulator that first and foremost helps me to fly this particular trainer. My PC is more than up to the task, so that isn't a problem, and I'm not overly worried about the price of the package.

What would be cool is something that allows for the altitude of the airfield, since Johannesburg lies at an elevation of nearly a mile. I've heard that a lot of RTF electric planes hardly fly up here on account of the air being so thin, and it makes about a 26% power difference to normally aspirated cars, so it must surely do the same to RC engines?

Which RCFS would best suit my needs?

The FS One simulator does allow you to select the simulated altitude. It also has a Hanger 9 Alpha 40, which should be similar to your Avistar. I think I would consider the altitude selection a minor feature for your trainer however, which is more than adequately powered. This is an excellent simulator for advanced fixed wing aerobatics and it has the best physics, which is why I have it. I do question the future of FS One as a product and the size of its market share, so you will have to evaluate it based on your needs. I can only hope that there will be more updates to this excellent simulator from Hanger 9.

Selig just mentioned in the FSOne thread that he's working on an update to fine tune the physics relating to harrier rolls, etc (better check the thread for exact details). So sounds like work on it continues.

Personally I would guess that there must be something organisational going on slowing down updates to it. Whatever the reason, I hope it starts to progress at a pace more up to speed with this market. FSOne has so much potential... Hangar 9 is certainly under-utilizing an awsome promotional tool. Fingers crossed for something soon.

Regardless, I recommend it also.

If using it to practice with the Alpha40 trainer, change the prop setting to 11x6 in the sim if you don't plan to use the Evo PTS prop on your real trainer... makes a difference. Also, there is a prescaled 60 size version of the Alpha in the aircraft selection if needed... you have to select "All scaled planes" to see it.
