I just picked up a Trex 450SA ARF on a lark... This is my first Heli....

So now what...?

I think the only thing I'm missing is a Gyro.

The servos I'm using are 3 HS55's and a HS65 on the tail rotor and all of the rest of the stuff that came with it... So I have avoided Helicoptors for over 2 decades what kind of stuff should I pick up to support a 450 size Helicopter?

I started with a larger heli (Logo10) and was hard for me to control it at first. I would strongly recommend you add the gyro (Futaba GY401 + Digital Servo S9254) combo. It is a bit expensive, (around $215) but worth every cent. It was very hard for me to learn the vary basic maneuvers before I got the gyro-servo combo. Even hovering was extremelly dificult and had many crashes even thou I started a very slow progress on purpose. Once I added these 2 elements my learning curve increased really fast. Money well spent. Another suggestion I strongly make is a good simulator. Real Fight is what I have, but theare are others in the market. While learning, it turned out extremelly valuable to me (saved even more crashes!)

Status: offline 		Look at getting a GY401 gyro. While the combo with the servo is indeed a great performer, it will give you a servo that is too large for a 450 sized heli, so I would suggest you just get the gyro by itself. The HS65 may be sufficient for your purposes for some time to come, but if not then take a look at the S9650 digital mini servo to go with the 401. The digital servo will handle aggressive backwards flight somewhat better, LOL.

I will put it on the Shopping list right now... :-)

I started to setup the Raptor in my 8UAS, HOlY CR*P!!!! The setup options are unbelievable! I have had this radio for 10yrs and I never knew it had this much Heli programming..

Is there a good site on Heli setup and flying instructions for noobs..?

By far the best place to go for TREX setup info is the Finless Bob video's.

Do a google search for Finless Bob. There you will find a multitude of videos for the TREX 450 that include everything from building, setting up, installing servo's, soldering, maintenance, setting up CCPM (great video..a MUST watch), to even flying.

Status: offline 		Congrats on the heli man!! When I moved up from the AxeCP I had a very similar setup to yours. HS55s all around including the tail servo. Against the advice of all the people on this (and many other forums) I got an eFlight G90 gyro. It does the job albiet with some tendency to drift. It can be set up to hold perfectly but that invloves a mess of measurements that I am really not in the mood to bother with.

Like Skarn said, have a look at the Finless video series. You will not regret it. As for your Raptor, wich Rappy do you have? I just madened my 50v2. I am in absolute awe of it!!

Status: offline 		Hibrass, maybe it is something in the air in Florida. Maybe we can fly when I come up the the Disney area for an annual meeting. I have the 450SA also. I've been building it with the Finless videos and should try to post some pics. I went with the Hitec 65 MG servos and the new hitec digital gyro & servo set. I put a ball link on the gyro control horn to reduce slop there, but I had to get extra link rods to make up for the one I used there. I put the gyro under the tail boom block to protect it and the esc inside the frame to protect it also. Be careful with the aligment of the connector links to the balls, I also took everything on the frame apart that goes into metal and blue locktighted it. I'll do the head before I fly it. I've had electricity in it, that was exciting the first time it had life in it. I ddi that to center the servos before I connected the control horns.

Now, I should also tell you I had mine for over two years before I had the confidence to start it. Take your time, have fun, let us all know how you do. Doc

It would be a pleasure to meet another Heli Noob..! I belong to a flying club not far from Disney so just drop me a line and we will see what kind of arrangements we can make!

In the meantime I have replaced the broken swash and finished tuning using the Bob White Videos.. (Very Helpful.) I'm not pulling as much pitch as suggested because of the shorter horns I setup with first.. about 8 degrees... I'm going to tinker with this setup until I get my Gyro and then I may goto longer arms with more max pitch... So far this has been a great experiance..!

Is 8 degrees max pitch enough for a noob to fly with??? Should I pull some power out of the throttle curve??? Or should I change the pinion to set the max head speed...?

Oh and what should be the max head speed I should be shooting for as a noob...???

It appears that I messed up the auto rotation clutch... I have no clue how...
