From what I understand (correct me if I am wrong), you will be trading in your current car for a similarly priced more fuel effecient one. Now since dealers hardly pay fair for trade-ins, you will most likely not be able to make an even trade for a similar condition car. Your parents will then be eating the difference. Let's say there is a 4 thousand dollar difference. Dale's math seems pretty reasonable to me in saying you will be saving about 2k a year on gas. Pretend you have to pay the 4K, would you be willing to pay 4 thousand to drive a more fuel effecient car? If the answer is no, then maybe reconsider having your parents spend money so you can save a couple of extra bucks on fuel... Also, assuming you have the V8 4X4 Ram, there is a problem if you ar eonly getting 9 mpg. Those cars on average get about 14 mpg, with mixed driving. A tune up seems to be in order, or a possible change in your driving style may save you 800 dollars a year on gas.
