I am a "Rookie" at this site and a "Semi" rookie at R/C cars. I finally broke down and bought the R/C car of my dreams a Savage X 4.6 RTR. I bought it two days ago and I have been trying to "Fire" it up. But so far it has been unsuccessful! =( Is there any advice from any professionals out there for this poor rookie? Any help or advice will do. I've done research on YouTube, Manuals, and Internet but still no avail. The engine has been Primed and I believe it almost started once. I've done the warming up the engine outside bid and the Heating up the engine block bid too. I know that any advice from the professionals will help me dearly! Thanks a bunch!

Status: offline 		Lean it out about 1/8th a turn.... Check to see if the glow plug is good, make sure the glow ingiter is fully charged. More advise should be coming soon

Status: offline 		im not a professional or anything but your glowplug might be burnt you might have got a bad one. or you fludded the engine so you should take out the glowplug and get all the fuel out

Status: offline 		the roto-starter button has popped out a couple of times. Should i just remove the glow plug and clear out the engine as instructed in the manual? Then replace the glow plug and try it again?

Status: offline 		Not sure how it can be burnt out but to check if it's still good, the some pilers and hold it so you can hold the glow ingiter to it to see if it light up. If the red button popped out a couple of time, when your checking your glow plug, unflood the engine like the manual shows.

Status: offline 		Like people said, check the plug. Blowing hard into the glowing element will tell you in what shape the glow battery is. If it is easy to "blow out" the glowing element, your battery may be dead or weak. Plugs draw a lot of current, and that battery will drain fairly fast with repeated starting attempts.
Plugs normally don't die from flooding the engine, or repeated starting attempts. And anyway, it's easy to check: take it out and put it in the igniter to see if it glows.

Unflood the engine.

Don't fill the tank much over halfway for the first starts. If you do, fuel tends to siphon into the engine, making it very easy to flood. This is especially true if you have a pullstart engine.
In fact, I never fill my tank over halfway for the first start of the day. After the engine has been run it starts a lot easier (I run a lot of Castor oil in my fuel, which stiffens up during the night, making the engine harder to start)

If it still drowns during starting, you can close the low speed needle 1/4 to 1/2 turn to see what that does. These needles are usually set VERY rich from the factiry. But make sure you properly set the needle before attempting to drive the car for any amount.

If you have a Rotostart, you shouldn't have to prime much, provided the "idle gap" in the carb is set correctly. Check your manual to gap the carb for a proper baseline idle setting (it's usually about 1mm). If fuel doesn't move in the fuel line, you can close off the exhaust shortly while hitting the Rotostart to prime the engine. Don't overdo it as this will quickly flood the engine.

Leave the body off while you're setting the engine up. That makes it a lot easier to get to all the controls.

Status: offline 		i had the same problem with my savagex 4.6 , this engine is just a bugger to start , make sure your glow ignitor is fully charged and your roto start batt is fully charged , and try not to flood the engine while starting and yeah try leaning the needle just a bit just so you can get it to start then richen it back again when the engine gets warm , keep doing this untill youve fully run it in , ALSO i found by using OS A3 glow plugs on this engine its ALOT easier to run

Status: offline 		Thank you all for the tips on troubleshooting my Savage. I haven't had time til today to check up on my Savage but I was able to pull out the glow plug last night and notice that it's still good to go. So now I am going to attempt to clear out the engine and try the set up again. Wish me luck and hopefully it will fire up this time. =)

Status: offline 		Turn your throttle trim up a little too, so that the carb is open a little more than at idle. Should be a button or knob on your transmitter for that. It will help the engine get that precious gulp of air it needs. They are also much easier to start if you will make some sort of starting stand, like a PVC pipe frame or even a stack of 2x4s to keep the tires in the air while you are firing it up. That way the engine does not have to fight the clutches when it makes that initial fire, it can just spin the drive train. I agree on the hour leaner on the high speed needle, probably the low speed as well. Keep us posted, I am not pro either. BB

Status: offline 		OK. I think I am making progress. I was able to start the Savage for a split second twice. But after that I couldn't get it to start again. It's been years since I last played with an R/C car so I am pretty amped to get this one broken in. After, both quick starts. I wasn't able to start it again. When I kept on using the Roto Start I could see a little bit of smoke comming form the exhaust. Any tips on what I can do to finally get this going on? I have it sitting on a large 5 gallon bucket right now. THANKS FOR ANY HELP IN ADVANCE!

Status: offline 		I can usually just blip the throttle as I turn it over and it will fire. Have you primed the engine correctly?

Status: offline 		Sucess! I finally got the engine to run! But the only problem now is that everytime I take off the Glow Plug Igniter it craps out and I have to start it again. Any advice?

Status: offline 		That is too rich. Try an eighth turn in on both needles. They want you to run insane rich to protect the engine. You can also run it for a little bit in the glow charger. I grab mine by the back bumper or wheelie bar and do a little front tire burnout to help build some heat in the combustion chamber. They can be obnoxious little buggers! BB
