RCtruckRacer -> Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/9/2008 5:40:51 PM)

OK, I love beer. Not all beer, I really don't care for American style pilsners (bud, coors etc). But good beer is one of the joys in life. Mana of the gods and all that.

However, has anyone noticed how dramatically the prices of beer has gone up? Or is it just in my area? Case in point (pun intended): One of my favorites, Widmere Hefeweizen, in one week jumped in price by almost $1.50 a six pack! That's over 20%! Not being able to stand not having my favorite beverage, I just ordered a kegerator. Keg beer is close to 1/2 the cost of bottled beer.

So what's the price of beer like in your area? How about overseas? Are you guys seeing increases as well? Anyone else going to get a kegerator?

Just curious. Very curious.

Rob

Everyone is having prices increased due to less hops being planted. The grain shortage is making it worse.

MY god, if they put prices up any more at the bars in Athens, it'd be a vice of the rich and famous. Imagine, we earn three times less money than the US and UK, and in some things it's balanced (the important things, like rent, bread, insurance, cigarettes, etc), but in luxury items, it's ridiculous. I pay $7.50 for a bottle of imported beer at any bar in the suburbs, and up to $15 for a bottle in the nicer clubs and restaurants. Over the off license (liquor store to you guys) counter, I'm paying about $3.50 a beer, depending. I'm like Rob, I love my GOOD beer, and boy do I pay for it.

Troopermanaic -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/9/2008 6:32:26 PM)

its $18-$25 for a 30 pack here

secretsg -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/9/2008 6:53:01 PM)

About $2 for a good bottle of beer here in the liquor stores. So not too bad yet.

Anomie -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/9/2008 8:00:25 PM)

Rob, I don't know what a six-pack costs. I didn't know they sold in such small quantities [:D]

I usually pick up Sierra Nevada or Fat Tire, and I believe both are around $15 for twelve bottles. The CRV boosts it, but that is the retail sticker.

Something like Bud or Miller is $19 or so for thirty cans. I haven't really noticed a rise in the near past.

Troopermanaic -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/9/2008 8:20:29 PM)

Down here is $2 for a can of beer $4 for a 40 and $8 for vodka. Prices arent out of control yet where I live either That is without tax. hypnotic <.< ^.^

sheograth -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/9/2008 10:34:59 PM)

mm I'll take a look next time I'm at a store. Though we generally pay a bit more for everything here in the Bay Area.

(Sorry Rob, I figured you'd like it [:D])

At the store the prices have gone up a little but nothing too crazy yet. Haven't bought what you consider a good beer in a while. I am still holding out for Dog Fish Head 120 IPA currently I have one but it is impossible to find as they only make it 3 times a year (maybe 4) and it is at least 10 dollars a bottle.

Troopermanaic -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/10/2008 5:11:23 AM)

Just came back from the liquer store, a litre of majorska was $4 and tax so the prices are still great in NJ... dunno about everywhere else. Was thinking about getting a 30 pak but a party awaits me tonight and I dont want my cans drank in 5 mins like last time.

Nick2618 -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/10/2008 7:19:33 AM)

I think ethanol is to blame here. It is raising the demand for corn becuase ethanol is alcohol. The real reason the add fuel to it is so they do not have to pay alcohol taxes. Becuase by adding 15% gas and 85% ethanol it makes E-85 which is undrinkable and they get to bypass that tax.[&:]

mechanicalguy -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/12/2008 2:36:20 AM)

I pay over $20 for a 12 case of Fort Garry Dark Ale, here in Canada. Sure, there is cheap **** like lucky for little over a buck a can, but I love dark beers. Guiness is my favorite and it is $1.75 for a regular size bottle.

I live close to the US/Canada border, and sometimes we drive to North Dakota (Grand Forks) primarily to pick up a case for the savings! Regular beer is very cheap (to us) in the U.S.A. But too be honest, the beer kind of sucks! No offense guys but your beers are too light! Is a regular budwieser about 2.5% or 3% alcohol in U.S.A? Our buds are 5%. We have a lot of 6% beer too. But the hard liquor is where it pays for me to drive across - a texas mickey for $15!!!!! That is 1/4 the price of here or maybe less (i've never bought a texas in Canada simply because it is that expensive). Of course it is very limited to what customs allows across the border, but I can bring a texas and 24 beers with having been in the U.S.A for 48 hours or more. I love grand forks lol!

AH man, I had some crazy 11.3% alcohol belgium beer the other day - like a guiness with a shot of rye in it. Awesome. Also Mississippi Mud is superb.

I'm curious, what is the etymology of that idiom? [:D]

Sorry to derail your thread, but it just fit so well!

I actually just made it up. I suppose that only helps to support the statement! Heck, I couldn't consider myself much of a logophile if I had no perspicacity...

Everything is going up since gas prices have. It's amazing to me that in the UK they dont spend near as much as americans spend.
$9.50 a bottle for us americans.

We are getting a new president soon, but I refuse to vote..[8|]
I could care less about Hillary Clinton and that other guy.

Beer and ciggarettes are not getting cheaper anytime soon...[:-]

Anomie -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/12/2008 6:47:31 PM)

As for the title of this thread, it sounds like more than one of us could use one of those beers [X(][:D]

Troopermanaic -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/12/2008 9:34:12 PM)

I evolved beyond beer

sheograth -> RE: Beer aficionados - Prices??? (5/12/2008 9:43:55 PM)

I normally drink wine or liquor as well but sometimes the situation is just right for a beer. I do worry about all the calories and carbohydrates in beer though. All alcohols convert to sugar so none are great if you're trying to eat moderately, but beer is the worst.
