I was installing the 400 long cans on my Tamiya Sherman, when the slider on top of the trans got my curiosity going . I took it a part and removed the shims on the shaft. Walla I have gear reduction. The slider moves the gear from normal to reduction. Why don't the others have the same set up? At least my Panther, Tiger and KT don't have it. They are all the newer black cased trans. Kinda cool feature having a choice of having a gear change at the flick of a lever.

Sounds like a good reason to own a Sherman to me!

Tailend can you take a picture of the part you are removing and what the gearbox looks like?

The trans look the same except the Sherman looks to have a few more gears and the slider. Here is the picture of the trans top with lever. Also the sleeves I removed of the shaft. They were stopping the gear from moving with the lever. There is a difference in running when you switch the gears.

I remember some years back this was done but the gears started to self destruct for some reason.... do a search on Armornuts site and you may find the referance. Id hate to see your boxes get fried!

Thanks for the heads up. I found a discussion on that board dated Jan. '05. It was between Nick, Willy and another guy discussing gear reduction on the Sherman. He mentions a plastic gear slipping so he screwed it to the metal gear next to it. I looked at my gear box and with out taking it a part I don't see a plastic gear that could cause slippage. All the gears I see clustered together are metal. They may have changed them. I guess I will take it apart and find out for sure. I really like the slower speed and torque you get with this FREE reduction.

I tested this set up. The gear mesh is horrible and probably will tear things up eventually so I put the gears back in the original arrangement. I wouldn't recommend it plus, you should really run some Graupner SPEED 400 6v motors over the 400 long cans with a stock gearbox. Better battery life.

I checked the meshing and there seems to be equal clearence in both positions. No excessive noise either. I run the 400 long can set up with dual 4200mah batteries. The tanks seem to have a good run time and almost unstoppable. I heard that the 400 6v is harder on the DMU and the long can 12v were better. I have already installed the long cans in all my tanks except the KT which has the new impact gear reduction trans and older Zigi 400 motors. I guess I could invest in a pair of Graupner SPEED 400 6v motors and test the difference. Thanks for the info.
