I bought the 4S charger from FMA and I am trying to understand the 5 Amp minimum requirement. I asked them what would happen if it was slightly less than the 5 Amp minimum and they said "If you use a power supply that does not have enough current, it could damage your charger and/or power supply".

I will buy a power supply that is more than 5 amp so there will not be a problem, but I thought I would get a bit more information from FMA. I could see that if it was 4.9 Amps I might not be able to get the full charge at the maximum rating, but what I don't understand is how that would damage anything? Does anyone else have a better understanding of this?

Thanks..Brian

Hi Brian

I do not know the FMA charger, so i can only give you general information.

Anny charger will dissipate some energy for its own circuitry use and in the case of a 4 cell lipo it also need to invert the power to be higher than 12 volt output from your 12 volt input voltage. this all uses energy.

I have seen some of my chargers consuming over 5 amps while i am only charging at a rate of 3 amp.

If you try to draw 5 amp out of a 4 amp supply something will give at some stage as it is not build for that. on the other hand if you only going to charge 1 amp and use a 4 amp supply you have a good chance that it might work forever.

Hope this helps.

For a cheap 5 amp supply look at this one.

I do have the CellPro 4S charger and it "can" pump up to 4A (hence the name 4S) during the charge session. That obviously requires a bit more capacity from your power supply. I'd "err" on the side of caution and plan for a bit of headroom.

My bench power supply can supply a constant 18A and can burst up to 21A. It's big, it's heavy and pricy ($75). My son has a electric Mini UltraStick with a 3S-2100mAH LiPo. We took the CellPro to the field with us. Normally I'd recharge using my truck's lead-acid battery. Just for kicks, I opted to use my field box which has a 7.5Ah gell cell. It charged the LiPo just fine but we estimated we'd get perhaps 2 charges before depleting my field box.

I doubt you'd damage the charger by using an undersized power supply but you'd likely toast the power supply by overstressing it.

Hi PipeMajor,

Thanks for the response.

The power supply I would like to use is a LinkWorld Model LP15-2 230 Watts computer power supply. The labels says it puts out +12 Volt at 9 Amps. So I should be ok. I have not had a chance to use it yet, my arthritis has gotten the best of me so far this year. I hope to get active flying again soon.

Thanks...Brian
