I have started flying an Astrohog and Goodrich Extra 300s and both are taildraggers. Takeoffs for the Astrohog are ok, but when I land, it bounces several times before it comes to a stop usually killing the engine. I know it is because of how I hold the elevator and also the tires are rubber and perhaps a little larger than needed. I plan to change tires from rubber to foam and make them smaller. This should help, but I still need to practice my landings.
The Extra is a touch nose heavy. I can land it ok, but when I try to taxi, it noses over into the ground. Also I need to work on the elevator transition on take offs.
I have Aerofly Pro Deluxe and I want to practice taking off using tail draggers. The problem that I am having is when I hold the elevator up to taxi, the airplane takes off. How can I set the airplanes so that they have to take longer to take off and let me practice using the elevator correctly?
Thanks

you can make the plane heavier, take off going with the wind, adjust the cg, or put a smaller prop on the plane. one of those should work...

there are two ways.

A two wheel landing, is where you fly your plane against the ground with a bit surplus speed. After the flare which brings the wheels about a foot above the ground, let go of elevator completely. The plane will drop on it's wheels with tail up. As speed bleeds off, the tail wil drop by itself.

A three-point landing. (much harder to do)
Flare as before, but keep the plane aloft by adding evermore elevator. If done right, eventually the wing will stall and the plane touches down without a bounce.

to get things just right, the wheel axle should pass through a line at 15° through the plane's centre of gravity. More forward, and the ride will be bouncy, rearward and nose overs are the rule.

jollycub,

The correct procedure for taking off with a taildragger is to hold the stick full back when applying power, (for tailwheel steering), then as airspeed increases ease forward on the elevator to raise the tail level, then rotate at the correct speed.

Many RC model, unlike full scale planes are overpowered.

As suggested increase the weight of the model (which should affect its stall speed, climb rate and control response) or use less power on takeoff.

Or you could adjust the models power output to a lower more realistic scale setting so applying full throttle will not launch the model airborne as taildraggers sit on the ground at a high nose attitude.

To practice with a longer takeoff run on the sim, takeoff downwind or setup with a coarser pitch prop.

For a wheel landing, gently fly the main wheels onto the ground, once they are on the ground ease forward on the stick to keep them there. Close the throttle and gently let the tail lower to the ground (fly the tail gently onto the ground) do not pull back on the stick as you may get airborne again or bang the tail into the ground. Once the tail is on the ground ease the stick back to full aft.

For a three point landing, hold the airplane off the ground by easing back on the elevator. This should be just off the ground. If the model is setup approximately right in theory the wing will stall when the plane is in the three point attitude. The plane will stall onto the ground all three wheels at the same time.
More difficult to do than a wheel landing but results in a shorter landing run.

Happy Takeoffs and landings.

Cheers
