Hey Guys,

I'm returning back to the hobby after a long 12 year absence- have been recently flying a 50cc Yak and loving it. I bought the AW 75cc Extra 260 yesterday with a DA-85 for power, and I'm wanting to get recommendations on how to power the ignition and receiver for this plane. When I left the hobby, everyone was using NiCads, and I have been flying my Yak with NiMH batteries. I would like to upgrade to a more reliable and powerful battery source, but the new technology of these batteries really confuses me! Can somebody recommend a set-up that will:

Work with my JR 9303 2.4 system
Power the DA-85 ignition
Power the receiver/servos in the plane
Only require charging at home, and not at the field every other flight
Not blow up, (at least not easily blow up)
Provide some redundancy to protect from a catastrophic battery failure

Weight is important, but I'm not hung up on shaving every ounce. Price is important, but I'm willing to pay a little extra if it means greater protection for an increasingly more expensive airplane. Also, I'm willing to purchase another charger, but currently I'm using an Accu-Cycle Elite, which I believe will handle LiPo's.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

You will probably get a lot of recommendations, but I would recommend going to the source.
You could call or go to Fromeco's web site and see their recommended setups.
Durlite is another supplier, FMA Direct, Hngtimes Hobbies, Smartfly.com.
Something to think about the new A123 batteries are the upcoming thing they have a nominal voltage of 6.6v so you don't need a voltage regulator.

I'm no expert on batteries, but I did stay at a Holiday Express last weekend.

My personal recomendation is Fromeco batteries, I have been flying them for almost 4 years and have had nothing but good things with them. I'd go with one 2600mah on the ignition and a single 5200mah on the reciever through their regs.

Thanks for getting back to me guys, wondering if I could ask a few more questions. When I tell you that I'm new to these new batteries, I'm not kidding. Really. I'm practically an idiot. Can you clarify for me:

Which regulator do you recommend for the batteries you recommend? (Do all these things require regulators?)
Do I need a power expander? (What is a power expander? If I need one, which one do I need?)
Which types of connector should I order on the batteries?
Sounds like the A123 batteries have a lot of charging advantages over regular LiPo packs, but are there any disadvantages?
What switches do I need to use with these batteries, or can I just use the MPI charge/switches I always use?

I have been researching these things on the net, but usually the information that I retrieve is far too technical, and talks only about current draw, amperage, flux capacitors etc...
I need a layman's explanation of what I need to get, and why I need it. Basically, I just need a recipe- I can buy the ingredients and put them together.

Thanks for the patience!

No worries, I completley understand how it feels when your new to the ever changing battery technologies.

For that reason we sell the complete package for all of our planes using fromeco batteries. All you need to do is give us a call and say I need the setup for the 75cc Extra and you are good to go. We can get you the charger, batteries , switches, and regulators all at the same price you would pay by going elsewhere.

I ran dual A123 1100mah packs for the receiver, and a single A123 1100 for the ignition. You don't need a power expander, but you do need enough power going into the receiver to handle the amps. Doing this without a power expander requires a little creativity, although you don't need to get too creative on a plane this small.
I would run the dual 1100's through dual switches. this will give you dual power input leads to the receiver which will work OK, but to really be safe, you could piggyback it with a Fromeco DC-up (we call it a D-cup) and be totally set.
The advantage of the A123's is you don't need regulators, which results in a cleaner, cheaper setup with less possible points of failure.
The real kicker here is that the entire battery system, including ignition battery, all switches, and the D-cup, will weigh only about 12.5 ounces and be just over about $100.
As for not wanting to have to charge at the field, I hear you - that's a personal decision and to each his own. But you should expect to burn about 225-275ma per 10 minute flight on this plane (that's what I burned on mine), which will yield about 5 flights per charge on the A123's, safely - you could probably get away with 6 after the batteries are cycled a few times and you get a more accurate idea as to your ma consumption.
