I have a hanger 9 p40 with a saito 100 installed, if balanced according to plans the nose tips over on takeoff, we did hold on to tail until rpm were high enough to let go and take off that way and it flew great with little adjustment, on landing it immediately tipped over also any suggestions

Retrofit it with the 90 degree rotating retracts from Sierra Giant Scale. They work well in planes of this size. These retracts are complete with machined struts that look very nice as well. These are available in either 95 degree or 100 degree angles. I would recommend the 100 degree since that will give a nice forward rake to the gear struts and go a long way toward curing your noseover problem.

try pulling the CG back 3/8- 1/2 inch it will help with the tipping a little mine flys fine with the CG in this position but its a touchy plane on landing, after it slows down,and is on roll out, I always have the elevator held up to pin the tail down to the ground for just this same reason,I have also cracked and repaired the cowl as well because I came in too fast and it tipped on me.

I have a Magnum 91XLS in my H9 P40 and CG is as stated in manual. I fly from a paved runway and the stock retracts work fine( was very surprized how well they work). I had a tip over on take off but I went to sleep on the elevator and she rolled up on the nose as I fed in the throttle. Take offs from grass can be a problem but I here you just have to really get on some up elev. and learn how to control the tail as you get up to take off speed. I also need to mind the elev. during the landing roll out. It works real good if you can keep the nose up and just let it three point onto the runway, but watch that tail and feed in some up elev. as she comes to a stop. Taxi in with full up elev. My H9 P40 is a really fun plane to fly and I love it !!

Hi,
I was having the same problem with my H-9 Spit , flying off a grass field. I solved the problem by removing the wood screws holding the gear in, and putting a 1/8 plywood shim along the back of the gear. This way you kick the gear out closer to the leading edge of the wing.

Yah, adding some rake to the mains will help for sure. Did you have to do any mods to get the gear to line up in the retracted position? The rotating gear on the P40 might be some trouble to do that with but it would be worth a try for grass fields.

Hey guys,my problem with the P-40 was that on the first engine fire-up at the field,with a light jump of the plane(while handstarting the engine),the right strut broke off.I replaced it with Robart oleo struts (looks even more realistic) and experienced me too that the plane wants to nose over;taxiing was impossible!My solution was to get the struts as far to the front as possible.To do this I had to put a triangular shaped shim of nearly 1,5 mm of thickness into the mechanics of the retract.Guess what?It worked extremely well:now it's easy to take of and land and make touch and go's(one of my favorite manoeuvres at the end of a flight).I love my P-40 and the RCV.91 engine is just perfect for this plane.It produces a magnificent sound on those fast low flybys and with an APC 14x6 prop spinning at 9100 RPM,it has perfect realistic power and speed!!I just love it.

All my taildraggers have their CG adjusted safely aft. How to do that safely? Find out how far aft "safe" is. Then move the CG there.

Takes 5 minutes with a yardstick. Input a Static Margin of 5% and then 20% and you've got an absolutely dependable CG range for YOUR airplane.

My P47 had a noseover tendency. I had the H9 suggested CG pegged, but it still wanted to tip sometimes. I checked the range and used that knowledge. Now it doesn't tip unless I run it into the tall grass.

I just finished a H9 Corsair. The mfg suggested CG seemed ok, but I checked while building and found I could go further AFT with the CG. I did. It doesn't tip.

I have one with an OS 91 FX and if I shoot the throttle too fast on take off it will tip over. Have to throttle up slowly. A friend has a Giant Scale TF P-51 that does the same thing. He says that is normal for these warbirds and you just have to learn how to take them off gradually.

BTW I love how this airplane flies. Other than take off it is the easiest warbird I have ever flown.
