I am interested in how much of a difference the optional high gain antenna makes with the video quality.

Status: online 		Never stalled a helicopter yet But I see what you mean. It does seem to have good downlink telemetry though, so you can keep an eye on your airspeed.

Status: offline 		I recently purchased a cheapo system for $44 online and while it "works" the video quality is less than desirable. That's why I'm interested in learning more here. I plan on chucking the 9 volt Tx battery for a lipo to save on weight. Want to put some kind of video recorder in my Nitro Planes Predator B. Might use a "thumb drive" camcorder like an Aiptek or the Hobby Lobby one.

Status: online 		I got one of the cheapo eBay jobs too. Not bad I supose, but not great. I have recently been using this though......



Takes a two gig SD card and is not too heavy, not for my fleet anyway. I also use is for snowboarding and mountain biking. Tough little bugger.

Status: offline 		That's a nifty camera, just checked it out Amazon.com. They say it weighs less than a pound, so it would work on my nitro sized aircraft, but not for electric.
Does is have a standard 1/4" threaded tripod mount? Gotta share this with my ultralight buddy (no...we don't fly at the same time...to complicated).

High gain antennas are better than the standard whip because it is more directional and not susceptible to noise for longer range application. I use my 8db high gain the most because it has strong reception and this greatly improves when you place it 2 inches from the ground. I can fly about 1000meters with no or very little static... unless I fly directly above me ( high gain do not like this.) Higher gain antennas like my 14db is better for longer range (8000 meters) but has a narrow beam therefore it is crucial to aim it at the plane at all time as possible. (Keep in mind the TX has a 3db whip on it.)

For the most the standard set up from Hobby Lobby is perfect way to start since it complies with all the FCC rules and it does not require one to obtain a HAM radio license. Also the camera is a "great" light weight unit. I've tested this in the dark, under bright light situation and it has awesome wide dynamics. Another great feature is the size and weight! I've seen this on board a Lama heli with the same a/v tx on the Hobby Lobby kit. Amazing!

Status: offline 		I see in one of your pix that the back cover is off of your Tx and that you use AA's to power it. Caution!!!! If your Batts fall out... there goes EVERYTHING!!!!! I was in Japan once watching a friend hand off his plane to a friend and the batts all fell out and that was the end!!!!! Nice stable looking set up on your heli!!!!

Status: offline 		The Easystar has achieved this, but you might want to look into a Multiplex Cularus or Easyglider. All proven for long range fpv. My buddy gets about 8Km on his Easystar, another reported 27km on his Cularus.

Status: offline 		Looking at the manual, it doesn't say the output power of the transmitter. Looking at the FAQ, it talks about the transmitter power not exceeding 10 mW, which means the system will only maintain contact at very close range. The 1000 meters advertised will only be under absolutely perfect conditions. I had a similar system (in fact the reciever looked identical) that would only maintain the link at less than 500 feet. There are also no specs on the camera. I would say if you're serious about FPV, this is probably not the system to buy. The transmitter makes all the difference.
