I recently purchased a MRC Super Brain 989, and put it through the paces charging up a few of my Nicd starter packs using the Auto Cycle mode for 2 cycles. The packs are 1500 and 1700 Mah. I charged them with the proper Mah, 6 cell, 3 amp charge, 5 amp discharge.
When the packs finish, the display reads "end" and the Mah displays 156 or so for the 1500 packs, and 177 for the 1700 packs. Is this correct operation, or are my packs not getting charged to capacity? Seems like the 156 corresponds to the 1500, and the 177 coresponds to the 1700 figure. Am I doing all of this right? The instructions included were terrible at best.

Unless there's a problem with the display (digits) then the packs only cycled to ne tenth of capacity. The display should read the actual number.

Either the packs cycled very quickly for some reason or perhaps the figure is "mah added" during trickle charge? The manual should tell you how to recall the data. It is possible that the packs are very near the discharged state or very near the charged state.

I recommend doing a regular charge or discharge.

Yes, this was the ending display after cycling the packs 2 cycles. Maybe it is charge added. Once I get them discharged this weekend I will try a basic charge and re-evaluate.
It does look like there should be a missing decimal though, 155 could = 15.5 being it is associated with 1500 maH

The display is always supposed to read actual capacity without decimals or extra digits. The manual also tells how to read the capacity after and during a charge.

My guess is that there's nothing wrong with the display and the batts "quick cycled"

I would do as Guver suggested. Do a regular charge or discharge to see what goes in or comes out of each pack indivdually. Let us know what you find.

I just got 2 new Orion 3000mah packs yesterday, and tried to cycle them at 2 amp charge & discharge, 7 mv cutoff and only showed 360 mah for each pack. today I tried discharging alone at 2 amps, and got it down to 50 mah with 1.0 v cutoff. When charging at 2 amps, it got up to 381 mah. I discharged again and charged up at 8 mv cutoff, as that is the max setting to use in the battery instructions and they displayed 470 mah. they also say to charge the packs at 2-3 amps. The packs seem to perform ok in the car when running, but I haven't had a chance to run them much more than a couple minutes, but not enought to run the battery down

I charged up one of the 1500 Nicd packs on my old reliable duratrax peak charger to know it was charged and then charged it using the 989 to see what I would come up with. using the settings you gave me it came out to 100 mah after charging for 7 minutes. This doesn't seem right to me as that pack was charged up before I charged it on the 989.

I've been talking to John at MRC Support and we came to the conclusion that it needs to be sent in to get checked out. I don't want to miss out on racing my electrics so I ordered a Duratrax ICE charger to hold me over while the 989 gets repaired. At least I got a good power supply out of the deal, but I'm fairly disappointed with this charger, I wish I could just trade it for the ICE, but it's used now so no dice. I guess we'll see what happens to it at MRC, and I can use it as a backup charger, or keep it in the car to charge on the field.

Well, I guess I'll update you guys, as it turns out my batteries were just crap. All of them as I found. I bought a new 4200 pack, and it works great.
Thanks for the input, guys
