I finally got around to putting together the WM intruder that I picked up last fall. I have had a few issues with fit and assembly on the bird. The first problem I took care of, the main wings did not match up correctly when mated together. I had to work on the wooden dowel and mating hole to fix this problem.

I am having the same issue with the rear stab, one side fits further back on the fuse than the other by about 1/16-3/32" so the tips of the stabs will not measure out correctly when measuring it to the front center of the fuse. I can't see any way of adjusting or fixing this problem. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue or not and if so how did you fix it?

Thanks,
Chadd

Anyone know if this will bother the flight characteristics of the plane much?

I have not heard of that problem with all the Intruders that have flown in SPA. I HAVE HEARD OF AND EXPERIENCED "weak" flimsy screws that hold the stab to the tube, and a few other minor problemsbut not that one. My wing fit together perfectly.

I may be wrong, but I dont think 1/16-3/32" will make much difference in the final flight characteristics.

Any comments??

Duane

Chadd:

I have 2 WM Intruders and they are OK so far. Here is what I would do.
I do not think that the stab being back is that much of a problem as long as it is square to the wing and fuse. If you know how much the difference is just put that in your measurements to square to wing and tail.

You MUST change the screws on the stab joiner tube. The sheet metal/wood screws will fail.
Luckily I caught min during a preflight (which I never do) but something looked crooked.
I tapped mine for 4-40 SHCS with washers and now they are fine.

You must seal EVERY seam on the covering. Otherwise you have your own targets to aim for as the covering pieces fluuter off the plane and to the ground.

You should replace the butter screws on the engine mount. They are phillips and soft. I replaced all of them with SHCS and also used nyloc bolts for the engine to mount joint. A little loctite on the mount screws helps also.

The last one is that the lower hatch fell off while flying yesterday afternoon. The steel screw just backed out and down it went. After an hour of walking through the cow poo poo we gave up. When I mount the new hatch I will use a nylon bolt for the mount. Even if it gets a little loose it wil not fall out.

All in all the Intruder is a really nice flying ARF and will do the SPA patterns very nicely.

Good Luck with yours

Peace

Bummer about the hatch going its own way! I too found out about the soft stab screws, I broke both off in the tube, not good. Working around the problem though.

Well I figured out what the problem is today. The holes and slots in the two stabs are in different locations between the two of them. I called Airborne models today about it and they said if I sent the stabs to them they would look at them and replace them if they thought they were defective.

I went ahead and ordered a set of stabs from them and I will send these back in when I get the new set, I really didn't feel like waiting 2 weeks or longer for a replacement set.

I wasn't overly impressed with the Customer service.

Thanks,
Chadd

Chadd:

I had to call Airborne Models customer service today for a new belly pan hatch. They were really good and had it in stock, took a credit card and sent it out UPS today. I have the spare from the other plane so I sent it slow. Hope your stab problem works out as the plane is a pretty darn good flyer. I had the stab screw problem that Free Bird described and it was a real witch (with a B) to get the broken ends out. The soft screws will twist right off in the tube. That can also tear up the stabs.

Good Luck with your "Trudy".

Peace

The cheap camera still works too.

Hard to believe.

Do you have any details or pics on how you did this? I looked at the screws they sent and thought to myself, " those are going to hold the stab on?"

Thanks,

I did two build threads on the WM Intruder. By "build thread", meaning that each one was stripped of all covering, many mods made to beef up the plane in all weak areas. New covering, etc. Have you seen it ? Couple pictures here, many construction pictures on the threads, Intruder 1 & 2. I have also modified the wing bolt areas, put dowels at bulkhead. After incidence on stab realized for optimum performance, epoxy to fuselage. I am not an expert on flight controls, etc. If you look at the picture showing new wing mounting bolt area, at the pan hold down bolt, this is an aluminum screw, mated to a female aluminum thread. Remove the stock metric piece. The supplied bolts will eventually fail. The pan can be beefed up from the inside, and I have glassed the entire fuselage and tail with half-ounce glass cloth and finishing resin. My opinion on this, even though it is a cheap ARF, do it right or not at all.

These are my last ARF's, except for the big stuff. Back to glass and foam Phoenix'.
