I got a HS 645MG a couple of weeks ago. It was amazing the improvement in handling, much stronger but in my case not much faster than the factory OFNA servo on my Ravager.

Today the servo craped out, it's turning very slow and more to one side than the other. I got home opened it up and noticed the screws were wet. I looked at the electronics and they seem dry. I looked at the gears and all I see is that some of the white grease is gray, but I can’t see any wear on the gears or bearing. I left it open for a little time, connected the battery (still open) and I tried the servo. It seems to be back to speed from what I can see, but I’ll have to test it closed and installed.

What can I do to fix or maintain the servo? The $$ is not the big issues is the down time of having to wait for a replacement. Man it feels like I spend more time working and cleaning the car than the time I get to use it since 21/30 times I've used it something goes bad.

Buy a new one, or if you want faster, buy a high speed servo (you will loose torque), or go digital.

I do have a HS625-MG comming, which is faster and that one I plan to use it for throtle. The thing is that this 645-MG is new and if I have to send it in I'll be down for weeks since there are very few LHS here so I have to received everything by mail.

the 6 range aren't really suited to 1/8th, I went through a few before I worked that out. they can't handle the constant stress & movement applied in 1/8th racing. I had a few servo motors give up on me. the hitec 59 range is better than their 6 range. coreless digital has stood the test of time for me.

I see the HS-5985MG has great stats with a 6V pack, but it's more than twice the price of the 645. If it's that much better it should pay for it self. Since I let my 645MG dry out (guessing it was humidity since I can’t think of anything else) next time it goes bad I'll order one of the 59 series. Thanks for the tip.

PS

The screw that holds the horn in place striped and I called HITEC to see how much they were and the CS person just took my info. and is mailing me 2 free. That was great service!

The hitec 5985 is the one I use for stearing. It's a top servo, I've had no problems with it at all.

The hitec customer support is awesome. I've sent servos back to them that have died a premature death & had them replaced free of charge.

The 645 only has 133oz in of torque. Suitable for throttle/brake but on the weak side for steering. Look for atleast 200oz in of torque for steering. The 958 has more torque and should be alright, Ive always went with the 200 or more for power.
If your concerned about moisture in the servo, look into plasti dip. Dip the servo into it and that will solve that issue, almost water proof even.
6 volt hump packs start out strong and after about 1 hour of run time you can see them slow down the speed and power of the servos. If you swap to lipo with a 6 volt regulator (5 amp) youll have 6 volts to the servos without any change in the torque or power during the run. It will also last 2-3 times linger than a hump pack would on a single charge.
Look into the JR servos, those are one of the best you can buy. The 9000t or 9000s are awsome, 333oz in of torque and the s has a .06 transit time. More speed on the gas side and power on the steering side. To much speed on the steering side and the buggy becomes twitchy.

Wow Nascar 333oz is really neccesary? I was on a couple of other threads and I heard other racers say anything over 133oz is good. Im not saying your wrong I just saw the servos with that much torque and there up there in price. Im ordering the Hs-5645 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUZ80&P=ML since Im just getting into racing and not planning on traveling. hey themorales check that one out it has more thann 133oz and is still a good price.

get at least 200 oz/in for steering. I run at least that, you will notice the difference & the servo will last longer (as long as you set your epa correctly). I don't think speed is necessary on throttle, but you do still need some torque for stopping the buggy. too much speed & you can open a carb too quick & result in a flame out if yuor engine isn't tuned to perfection.

also look at teh ACE servos at Carolinas RC, a lot of guys run them with great success at my local track. they do suck a bit more battery power though, but they're good value for money.

Up date.

I opened my new HS-645MG and let it dry out, then I dropped some 3-1 oil on the gears, closed it back up and installed it. At first it was acting the same (slow) but a little play and it got back to the original speed and torque (from what I can see).

The HITEC customer service seems to be impressive since I called to order a couple of the screws that holds the horn in place and they offered to send me some for free, but having a new servo act up that way is a little disappointing.... hope it doesn't happen again (for a while) since I'm just a weekend basher.

Did you tell them about the servo? if you sent it in to them they wopuld test it & if faulty they'd send you a new one. I've had to do that before.

their customer support is the best for any servo manufacturer.
