Had a mishap with the Pulse XT 40 today...
It was my second flight of the day, my first flight was short because my engine leaned out to much and needed to be re-tuned.
After retuning it, I sent it off again. Everything seems normal, until I bring this plane into a hover. It was hovering nicely, until all the sudden the engine quit. The plane about 25ft off the ground, stalls and the fuselage breaks in half.
The cause of the crash is believed to be the clunk getting stuck in the front of the tank.
I have plans to rebuild it, the damage is pretty easy to repair.

I doubt anyone will reply to your post due to the sheer ignorance on your part, but because I have had a few to drink tonight I will. Why are trying to hover a plane like this? It was not meant to hover so none feels your pain. Buy a 3D capable plan, crash it and re-post!

Actually, mistakes like this do happen with low-wings like the Pulse. You fly the pattern on a regular basis enough. Do inverted flight, loops, wing-overs, hammerheads, and all the works. Sooner or later, you get bored and then get the idea that low-wing trainers are invincible. In this case, the pilot figured that he could do some 3D with it, which was successful until the engine died apparently. My Rapture 40 went down when I tried something similar, only this time it was a kite hover into the wind, which is why I feel this thread needs to be here, so that others know what can happen when an airframe is flown beyond its limitations. My Rapture tip-stalled, spiraled, pancaked, and then cartwheeled. It just about busted the wing to pieces underneath the covering and made a new set of wheel wells after the hard landing, mandating a total rebuild of that structure. It will be back in service soon. The repairs were almost as much as a new kit!

I see it somewhat differently. He had to 'retune' the engine before flying it again, said it was to lean.

I would have to presume that it 'split in half' after it hit the ground, because 'the engine quit'.

I would have to believe that he did not really know how to set the mixture for flying 3D and simply set it improperly, probably still to lean. The engine will not run very long if it is to lean, especially during a high-fuel demand process such as a hover.

Nope, strictly operator error.. did not set the mixture properly.

That post didn't help at all you realize , I was doing it long before this weekend and it pulled out just fine, it may not be 3D, but that doesn't mean that hovering is beyond its capability, especially if it was hovering fine before my little engine quit on it.
I do realize I set the mixture improperly, thats my fault, but me trying to hover the thing wasn't really a mistake.

F-15 Fan,
Thanks for the post. I hate that post like yours are rediculed but pay no attention to it. Engines on true 3d planes quit also and end up on the deck in pieces. And for a Pulse being hovered, it will do it. A friend at our field hovers his with a 55ax. It's actually pretty cool.

F-15 fan,
Ignore guys like that. The hobby is supposed to be fun. If you enjoy doing some 3d in a plane like the Pulse then go ahead and have some fun.

Maybe I should have got a Pulse instead of building that kit...

You can ignore what you want but if your skills allow you to hover a low wing trainer then why not allow your skills to grow and buy a 3D trainer?

Because I don't have the money to buy another plane. Someone from my field is giving me a Twinstar and I won't be able to fly until I can find the right engines for it. I am 15 and have to worry about getting a car too.

Dont worry about it man, this hobby is about fun! When Ive the skill I will probably try stuff like that with my trainer just because!!

If we worried about whether or not our models were "built for that" many of us would never do half what we do. In my inexperienced opinion making a model do something its not designed for succesfully is a sign of true skill!! (and sometimes just a hint of insanity LOL)

Fly within your budget, but mostly HAVE FUN doing it!!

I have seen people hover a Eagle before. Enjoy what you are doing within the budget you have. This is a fun hobby. Stick enough motor in it & you can hover a brick if you want to.

Heck, I try to hover everything I have. None are 3D. I do try them at a higher altitude, though. With my Flying Lawnmower I need to be very high. After it stops vertically, it drops like a rock for a very loooong distance.

Thats what our club president told me last Sunday about flat spins, after I admitted to attempting a VERY high altitude flat spin with my trainer. Then he proceeded to tell me how to set her up for it, and what to do to hopefully make it flat spin once I am ready. (more control throw isn't something I think I am ready to set my plane up with just yet, she still scares me a bit from time to time with the docile training set up.)
