speed959 -> lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 12:38:21 AM)

ok i am gonna be bashing in my yard with a rusty vxl and want to know what battery type, lipo or nimh. i want it to be ok quality and still keep it considerably cheap.

sheograth -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 12:39:31 AM)

It's almost criminal to run a brushless motor on anything but a lipo. [&:]

nitrosportsandrunner -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 12:48:35 AM)

i have a venom 3s lipo, it ROCKS. my rusty vxl on 3s is the 1st rc iv had that i didnt want more power. its also the 1st rc iv had that broke driveline parts(driveshafts and diff gears) i have around 25 hours of use on my rusty, so it can take the power for awhile before you gotta worry. i know many people use 7.4 v lipos, which get better run times than nimh. the only downside to going lipo, is buying a charger that can do lipo. alittle initial cost, but i feel its worth it. get a decent lipo charger, 2s lipo. thatll get you started, plenty of speed. then when you have an extra $150, get a 3s lipo and get ready for 60mph!

speed959 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 12:52:52 AM)

what about a battery like this has anyone used one, are they good quality

nitrosportsandrunner -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 1:29:53 AM)

that might be a good battery, but it wont give you 60mph. see where it says 12c, that rating has to do with the amount of power it can put out. my venom 3s lipo is 20c. again, not saying its a bad battery, but it wont be as fast as other 3s lipos. should have really good runtimes tho.

RevToTheRedline -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 2:02:25 AM)

Not to say you are wrong nitrosportsandrunner, but what amp hour rating is your Venom 3s? that eBay battery linked above is 60A continuous

Even though your Venom might be 20C it's gotta be over 3000mah to be better than it. Since you didn't give any mAh rating there is absolutely nothing to base this "20c" discharge capacity off of. Just cause its a higher number doesnt mean it's better.

rmesa4321 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 5:55:07 AM)

I agree with Nitrosportsandrunner, lipo is definitely the way to go. Waaaaayyyy longer runtimes. I used to use three nihms when i would go and play with my truck now i just take one 3s 5400mah lipo and i get more runtime than the three combined. Oh and alot faster!!!

nitrosportsandrunner -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 1:23:08 PM)

oh, i should have been more clear rev. my venom is the 3s 5400mah battery. im not totally sur how one lipo compares to another, besides how many cells it has. all i know is my battery in the vxl kicks but! iv seen some 3s 8000mah batteries, but i dont have money for one right now. that would probly give me nearly an hour of runtime!

speed959 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 1:45:31 PM)

thanks for you advise, so how long do you think a 5000mah battery would last, like 30min??

ah-see -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 1:54:49 PM)

Try these, i have a couple of the 2S packs and they are very good for the money. I hit the LVC of 6.2V on one of my 2S elite packs and my charger put 5089 mAh onto it.
Gotta pay for shipping from cheapbatterypacks, but they're slightly cheaper than rclipos.com

shibby1 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 1:55:39 PM)

I know all these guys in here want you to go lipo but i was thinking of going that way to but it was to $$$$$. Go to www.boomboombatteries.com and look at their 7cell batts their really nice. Some guy did a review on them and he had a rusty mamba 5600, he got 35 mph with a standard duratrax 7cell but with these EnerG batts he was close to 45 much higher discharge rate. pluse he was getting around 25 mins off the 4200 mah 7cell duratrax but with the EnerG batt he was getting almost 5 to 10 mins more. EnerG batts arethe best nimh batteries out their to lipo.

speed959 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 2:03:06 PM)

wow thats pretty expensive for nimh, anyway that battery i was looking at, how fast do you think it would put a rustler vxl up to

That's totally up to you, depending on: how you run your vehicle, how you care for it (including maintenance), how you charge the batteries (including what you use to charge them), and what sort of gearing you choose.

But keep in mind, these electric vehicles were not designed nor were they intended for long run times. If that's what you're looking for you're chasing a dream, and you'll end up chasing your tail ..................................

NJRC -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 3:14:15 PM)

since nobody really read into the OP carefully to understand that he is trying to choose between lipo and nimh so that there means that if he hasn't already experienced owning a lipo, then no matter what....it's not going to be cheap for him as he still is going to need a lipo charger that can handle whichever lipo battery he chooses if he chooses lipo.

So if you plan to go lipo, it's not going to cheap as you are going to need a proper lipo charger which will be $125+

So if you don't have a lipo battery and are going to need a charger for it too, then I suggest you do a package deal like so MaxAmps 5000HV 11.1V VXL Brushless RTR Kit

NJRC -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 3:29:36 PM)

uhm, considering that 75% or more that switch to lipo still use nimh so why buy a cheap $50 lipo charger that can only charge one type of battery?.....along with considering that I looked at the OP signature where it states that he is also into or getting a heli which mostly all of them now use lipo's. So to sum things up, you get what you pay for and what good use it will bring to you overall.

speed959 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 10:27:47 PM)

sorry my sig is very old, i was gonna get the heli but never really got around to it.

ozium -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 10:41:05 PM)

Are you going to run mostly in your backyard? Normally I use a 3s lipo on my Stampede but when I'm in the backyard I use a 7 cell nimh.

My backyard gives me about 30'x30' to run in - in that small amount of space there's not enough room for the full power of the lipo to be a factor. I get just as much bottom end power and torque from the nihm so in my 30x30 backyard I can't tell the difference if I'm using the lipo or the nimh. But when I've got a lot of room to run the lipos make a big difference and the nimh's are too slow.

Forget using a 6 cell though - too slow.

Oh yeah I get about 30-35 minutes on 5400mah 3s lipo and just a little less on 4700mah nimh's.

speed959 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 10:57:23 PM)

its in my backyard, but my backyard is pretty big and is this charger any good

nitrosportsandrunner -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/12/2008 11:04:58 PM)

i should have mentioned that also, on 3s lipo you need a huge area to run. my venom 3s 5400mah gets around 25-30 minutes of runtime. depends on where and how i run. running any longer than that would likely heat up the motor/esc too much. my battery is only warm at the end of a run. much better than any nimh iv used. of coarse, i was always using 6cell 3300's on high demand aps.
iv you dont have the cash for 3s, get a good 2s, like the one you posted or some other brand. there is no loss of voltage in lipos, untill the esc cuts the power in half to let you know its time to take the battery out.
when i 1st went lipo, i was alittle scared. worried about charging or over-discharging and blowing up a very expensive battery. but its been as easy to use as a nimh, runs full power till the end and gets great runtimes.

Yep, plus most tracks require hard cased Lipo's.
And you do need a big area to run Lipo.
But if you stay in nimh like I have then you have to run a faster motor, because the lipo powered cars will be kicking your butt,
because thier vehicle will be alot lighter. Nimh the higher the mah, the more weight is added to the chassis.

I have a 4200ep nimh batt, and I get 12 mins with a 6.5 lite novak motor in my B44.

So some have to run nimh, because all they carry is soft cased lipo packs.

And the newer technology coming out is Lithium-Ion, which is much safer than Lipo and just as good and is priced about the same.

After seeing Lipo packs blow up in person at the track, people still use them. Blowing up your money...nothing better..[8|]

Access -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/13/2008 1:55:51 AM)

It depends on where you are running. I use 3s on all my bashing setups and the rusty VXL won't break 35mph the way I have it geared (16/83 for grass or tough terrain).

Also LiPo is no longer that expensive, there are cheap 3s LiPos for $60. and cheap chargers for $25., batteries which will still far outperform the most expensive NiMH batteries.

speed959 -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/13/2008 2:00:01 AM)

i was looking around and found these chargers

Just one thing to keep in mind, the cheap chargers are basically going to be overnight chargers when used with a larger battery, if you are charging a 6000mAH battery with a charger that can at most put out 1000mAH, it is going to take ~7 hours. Which isn't necessarily a problem, you can leave it in your bathtub, charge overnight and run the next day. But if you want to charge at 1C, which takes around 2 hours, then it might be worth spending a little more and getting a better charger.

mr. ilikehelp -> RE: lipo or nimh (5/13/2008 2:45:00 AM)

so im probably getting a rustlervxl and are probably wanting lipos so which ones to get and i also want a good charger. im new so i dont need the worlds best lipo but i like quality chargers.
