nitrowatt -> Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/12/2008 2:53:18 AM)

Been flying this superb bird for around 10 years using OS 60FX piped...on 3rd engine (one being replaced under OS's awsome warranty) ...now maybe needing a fourth. Mac quiet piped turns 11X9 M.A. prop well (tried many props and while not the best vertical gives the best speed)...But I'm sure there are better engines out there. I'd like to stay side exhaust since I'm setup that way now, sideway's mount with the pipe under the fuse with a Hyde mount. Love the plane...but have gone through a few bearings with the OS's usually running 15 or 20% nitro. Plane's been mothballed for 2 years and just got everything worked out (cleaned out) for another season...but I don't think the engines going to last much longer. Thanks for suggestions! -Will

Hi Will,
Put a Tower 75 in it.
The Tower has the same bolt pattern as O S,
so You will not have to redo the mount.
Run's great on 10% Nitro.
They sell for about $95.00 from Tower Hobby's.
If your a member of their super saver club,
You get free shipping and double the standard warranty.
Just My $.02,
H.

I'd recomend one of two:
1) The AXE ROSSI 60 5P. Look for a seller called rossienginesusa in the auction site (can't write the name, but yo get it). You get the engine with a TUNED SILENCER for 200$
2) A TT 60 Pro. use the carb from your FX on it, and you have a great engine.

BTW: If you don't mind the displacement, just use a .90. The modern ones have the same or LESS weight as the 60s.

OS 75 AX

nitrowatt -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/13/2008 1:50:33 AM)

Thanks guys! Just read the review of the 75AX and I'm sold. Wondering what it would do with a 12X11 or 12X12?. Probably haul!!! I'd have to lengthen the main gear for any more diameter (taildragger)...but no big deal. I'd heard of the 75 but thought it was ringed...gonna search for "ABL" not familiar with that. Thanks again.

okelly -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/13/2008 6:15:37 AM)

Don't mess with your gear, just use a 3 blade prop. How about some pics of that dirty birdy?

dhal22 -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/13/2008 11:31:49 AM)

i was going to mention the axerossi. but i don't know enough to recommend it. it does appear to fit the bill of a 'modern' 60.

There is not enough difference between the power output of a .61 and a .75 to go up in prop diameter. You'll just get a couple of hundred more rpm than you are getting now running the same prop that you had on your .60.

nitrowatt -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 2:55:49 AM)

Ed, if it would turn a 12X10 or 12X>10 at the same rpm as I get with an 11X10 I'd be happy. The extra inch diameter would even improve the vertical. I like going for pitch speed since the plane is pretty slippery and I've found that at the slight expense of vertical (still will go vert out of sight after takeoff, just a bit slower)...once it gets going level and on the pipe the engine unloads she really boogies!...IMO the beauty of turnaround pattern. We all love those 120mph 6ft high slow or point rolls! Thanks for the advice Sir! Will.

BTW okelly I've tried 3 blades and wasn't that impressed although I didn't thoroughly go through very many combos. I'll post picks as soon as I can.

nitrowatt -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 3:38:06 AM)

Just threw the cowl and prop on for a few pics!

nitrowatt -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 3:58:32 AM)

Just looked at the Rossi's...WOW! A bit pricey but 3yr warranty...and BIG power claims. Definitely more pricey than the 75AX (still with a great 2 year warranty). Is it worth it guys? My plane is dear to me since it's so unusual these days to find anything on the field built from a box of sticks (you guys know what I'm talking about) so in respect of the plane (and build time) I know I shouldn't "skimp"...but would I see a real advantage? Thanks again! -Will

okelly -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 1:27:48 PM)

Hey Will,

Thanks for the pics. I just love Joe Bridi's designs.

As for the Rossi, I would take a Rossi over the AX any day. Rossi engines are the Ferraris of model airplanes, great quality and brute power.

windcosmic -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 1:31:51 PM)

go to planethobby and look for a Novarossi .60 side exhaust

okelly -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 3:15:07 PM)

NovaRossi is a different branch of the family and a separate company. I hear they make very good car engines. Haven't seen one in action but I bet they are good.

flywilly -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/14/2008 4:16:13 PM)

M 2 cents: go with the OS 75AX. I have a brand new AXE Rossi rear exhaust 61 that I will be 'playing' with later this summer. Rossi engines are very well made, no question!!, but nothing beats an OS for out-of-the box ease of operation and it should be a drop in replacement for the 61FX (I read the reviews, but can't remember). You can get a side exhaust Rossi on ebay as the US distributor regularly places them on auction there. I think there is a side exhaust with tuned muffler listed right now for $199.
I've heard that OS will stop making the .61FX sometime soon.
The displacement difference between the 75AX and the 61FX is almost 25% which means the 75 with a stock muffler will be at least as powerful as the piped 61FX. I've run the OS 1.20AX extensively (about 200 flights over the past year) and really liked the engine. I never liked the remote needle set-up on the FX series of engines.
Good luck and enjoy your DB - one of my favorite airplanes!
-Will

Hey Ntirowatt,

Awesome looking Dirty Birdy you have there!!![sm=thumbup.gif]. I have a new Dirty Birdy 60 kit I got from Bluejay Models that I am looking forward to building soon. I plan on using an older pumped K&B61 that I hope will be strong enough. I haven't made up my mind whether or not to put a pipe on it though.

Give us a flight report when you fly your plane with the new engine.

nitrowatt -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/15/2008 1:44:57 AM)

Thanks for advice and compliments! hr I love pipes! I can't remember a plane I had that didn't have one except my first, a Kadet Senior just an old LOUD Supertigre 56 on that one. That old KB pumper probably has hotter timing than the FX I have now. Enjoy the build...it's half the fun and we all know the pride factor of a built craft. I'd imagine your kit has better instructions than my original Bridi kit had as it was basically a plans build. Will

hrrcflyer -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/15/2008 12:49:16 PM)

Nitrowatt,

It's funny you mentioned the instructions for the DB. As it turnes out, they are exactly the same as the original kit. It's like someone said on a different thread "The instructions leave allot to be desired"[:)]

nitrowatt -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/15/2008 8:03:29 PM)

Interesting Hr! Not that bad of a build really as the wood is usually pretty choice. The hardest part for me was making a tight and removeable engine cowl. I sanded everything to shape and literally cut it off the firewall with an exacto saw. I'd love to find a fiberglass engine cowl...but I guess it would be best to make a mold of the one I built. It came out nice though. Are you doing retracts?

hrrcflyer -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/15/2008 9:55:41 PM)

Nitrowatt,

I recently picked up a set of Rhom Air trike gear retracts that I will be using on my DB unless I find something else to use them on first. Also, like another member here on RCuniverse, I am considering using my DB for my first attempt at glassing and painting a plane, but I have a long time before I need to make that decision.

Ed Cregger -> RE: Good modern 60 side exhaust for Dirty Birdy? (5/16/2008 5:40:14 AM)

I just missed buying a glass and foam Dirty Birdy. But, to compensate, I did buy a glass and foam Phoenix 5 from Sig (Hi, Billy!). She is a great person to talk to on the phone.

I have the Bluejay balsa kit of the Dirty Birdy too. Very nice kit and a great flying model.

Maybe it's just me, but I've not been impressed with any of the .74 to .75 two-strokes. At least not enough to prefer them in classic patternships. I guess it is that old habit of sticking with 10cc engines to stay "legal". Gotta have a pipe, or at least a Jett or Ultrathrust muffler.

There is a fellow selling Rossi side exhaust engines on the Bay for the same price as the OS .75AX from Tower, plus the Rossi AXE .61 side exhaust engine comes with either a short tuned mini pipe exhaust, or a full length tuned pipe with header and hardware. All for the same price as the OS .75AX (without factoring in Tower's discount number deals). I voted with my wallet and bought one of the side exhaust Rossi .61 engines and one of the rear exhaust versions. I also own some OS .61 engines (FSR & SF) that I could use.

Back when I flew some pattern in the late seventies and early eighties, I could never catch a shop with a Rossi .61 in stock when I had the money to buy it. Almost began buying Picco engines. I did fly OS and Webra .61 engines back then. Both hard carb problems when compared to a Rossi. The Rossi engines did not need a pump. The OS (FSR) and Webra Speed .61 engines with Dynamix carbs did need pumps.

Ed, you are the MAN.

My bet is that a Rossi + TS will beat the 75 AX on power. They might be a little harder to break-in and to initially set up, but they last forever, have brute power and can use 0% nitro. I'm not trying to start another OS vs. X-brand war. I love OS engines, but comparing OSs to Rossis is like comparing a Toyota to a Ferrari.

BTW: Mr Bridi's preferred engines were Rossis (even though he was sponsored by others at times).
BTW2: The seller you are referring to is rossienginesusa, as I wrote on post#3, He is a great guy.

I thought my post sounded familiar! I basically said everything that you did in post #3. Sorry about that. <G>

What about the K&B Twister with the tuned muffler? Light and reasonably priced.
