tewitt1949 -> Seen one of these fly today (5/12/2008 3:35:29 AM)

Hi All. I was at the field today and a guy had one of these and it flew great. It weighed only 7 oz. Although it was electric, I don't see any reason a small sure start wouldn't work. It was a nice little plane. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/micro-telemaster.htm

combatpigg -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/12/2008 3:43:28 AM)

Somebody started a thread about one of these awhile back, but I don't remember the outcome.

tewitt1949 -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/12/2008 3:46:51 AM)

They only concern I'd have is with electric you can slow it down and it flies real slow. With gas it would be a real screamer. Might be white knuckle.

Good [8D].

CP - when will we see your build thread with one powered by a Fora????[:D]

It's funny you guys should mention ridiculous powering.....I was just thinking yesterday about doing a thread where I make the rounds with my Cyclon and bolt it to every 1/2A plane that I've got hanging, then take action video.
Some planes would look pretty comical, like the HalfWit, Blink and DNU. There is also a Guillows FW 190 hanging that needs a "wake up call" someday [:D].

I would love seeing such videos!

What I remember of that thread was the kits were on sale cheap, turns out they had a lot of bad warped wood...Rog

Will you dig the hole before you launch?

lildiesel -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/13/2008 1:29:56 AM)

I've got the Micro Telemaster kit that I want power with a PAW .03 as a park flyer. Nice kit for the price. Unfortunately I've only gotten as far as figuring out where to put a new, slightly heftier firewall and beginning to frame up the fuselage. Now it's on the shelf while the bench is full of 1/2A C/L stuff. As slowly as my building usually goes, it will not fly until next summer.

OzMo -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/13/2008 1:36:55 AM)

Would a Sure Start be to much for one of these? prop it up a little like a texaco???

jentzsch -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/13/2008 5:44:22 AM)

That would be a fun project to put on a glow engine... do they even make them small enough for that?

And if it had ailerons too.....

combatpigg -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/13/2008 6:04:53 AM)

The photo that shows the ribs makes it look like the spars are either 1/8"x1/8" or 3/16"x3/16". If the spars are 1/8", use spruce and a strong dihedral brace for .049 power. Looks like it would be a great plane and 35-40 mph tops with an average .049.
Wings built this light always need to be checked for twists, I know a flyer of light stuff who brings an iron to the field.

tewitt1949 -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/13/2008 1:16:53 PM)

CP. Your right about wing warp. The guy that had the plane that I saw commented about wing warp. To fix it, he put 2 wing braces (threaded push rod) underneath on each side and used clevises on one end of each brace that he could adjust to counter any warp. The braces looked like the ones used on a piper cub. He said he hasn't had any problems since. He said it also made the sings a lot stronger.

Actually there is a larger version probably better suited for a Sure Start called the Mini Telemaster. 48" wingspan and RTF weight advertised at 20 ounces.
I doubt this one would "shine" with any .049 and would fare better with a Norvel .074 or O.S. LA .10. Structurally the Mini should take the smaller IC engines though these days it is only advertised as an electric model.
The price is right on this one. I think a better deal than the Micro. The Mini is also available as an ARF for about $75.00. Here is a link to the kit:
http://www.hobby-lobby.com/telemaster-mini.htm

'Course a micro would be lots of fun to watch! I don't think I would want to fly one with more than a Pee Wee .020 on it.

Are we talking about the same plane? The "micro" has 3 feet of span, it probably just needs a little more wood in a couple of spots to handle a .049.
With a 6x2 it would maybe get up to 30 mph in a power dive? [X(]

tewitt1949 -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/14/2008 3:08:04 AM)

The micro and mini are two different planes. One is larger span than the other.

lildiesel -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/14/2008 3:24:41 AM)

Over at "Everything Diesel" we have a long thread about the Mini Telemaster [40"] powered by .10 & .15 sized engines, to my mind really over engined projects that could be flown nicely with an .049 or .061. When I decided to get in on the Telemaster fun with a Micro [35.5"], those guys thought I should use my R/C Pee Wee .02 for lighter weight and greater performance instead of the PAW .03 lump. But I will persevere with the diesel since the way I build and paint I will need the extra nose weight. [:)] Anyway, looking at the fuse of the Micro on the shelf above my work table, I think a Sure Start would be fine the way everyone wants a rocketship in this forum. [;)]

ps: with a flat wing and ailerons it would not be a Telemaster.

pps: as for wing strength and warping, I've been thinking of spruce and shear webs for the main spar(s) to make it an I beam and adding alternating diagonal braces from L.E. to T.E. in the wing bays.

mylamo -> RE: Seen one of these fly today (5/14/2008 5:37:11 AM)

I have built three sizes of Telemasters and they all flew well
with ailerons and flaps. I put a .45 on the Tele "66" and a
.61 on the Tele .40 and a .15 on the Mini. Mine all had to have
considerable beefing up but they sure are fun. The Micro will
need some more wood to make it right for me.
