get rit dye from your local grocery store, usually they have it. you basically get the dye setup and dip you rims, just be careful that you dont warp your rims with the hot water.

Supplies needed:
- White nylon rims
- Waxed dental floss(mint flavor optional)
- Big pot
- Stirring utensil
- Rit dye(available at most grocery stores)

Take your dental floss and pull off a long piece. String the floss through the rims, and tie the two ends together leaving enough slack to hold on to while the rims are cooking.

Now fill the pot with water, not too full, about 3/4 full. Set the stove to medium high and pour in the RIT dye. Stir slowly and consistently.

Keep stirring and slowly increasing heat, until the rims are the desired color which will usually take about 20 to 45 minutes.

Remove rims and rinse in hot water, then warm water, then cold water.

Finally, let the rims air dry...

thanks, bro - I will give it a try and post pics of the results - unless they turn out pink or baby blue or somethin like that - in which case you will never hear about again!

actually, if they turn out pink, I can send them to Rich to match his body!

I miss the days of dying all my parts different colors. My RC-10T's and 10's were all sorts of various colors over the years. Same gold or black pans, but all sorts of different colored bits. Purple, blue, pink, yellow, etc, sometimes all on the same car. I used to buy new parts just to have a complete color change. You will like the dying experience, pretty cool to see the transformation. Ed nailed the process in his post, follow that and you'll be fine.

What happened to the natural parts for these things? If you buy them in kit form do they still come with parts you can dye? Or is everything black now?

Woot! My first attempt at dying rims was a success! A few pics are posted below. Based on input from everyone, I got a big pot, Rit fabric dye and the nylon rims. Liquid dye rather than powder was used as it seemed like it would be easier. I chose Scarlet to get a nice blood red color. Zip ties through the center of the wheels were used to put them in and out of the dye solution. About 3" of water (enough to easily cover the 2" high rims) was heated until it was just about ready to boil with small bubbles forming in the bottom of the pot. I added about 1/3 of the 8 oz bottle of dye and turned the heat down to simmer. The wheels were put in and left for about 10 minutes. During that time, I was stirring the solution and checking the wheels every few minutes. The wheels were not as dark as I wanted and did not seem to be getting darker, so I added another 1/3 of the bottle. After another 10 minutes of stirring and checking, they were the color I wanted. I took them out and rinsed them in warm, then cold water. I definitely got the nice deep blood red I was going for, and it got even deeper after the wheels cooled down. You can see some of the results below including one of the rims with a new Gladiator tire on it. Overall, it was really pretty simple. I would encourage anyone to give it a try. I will post some pics after I get them mounted on my truck.

I doubt it since the hot water could actually debond the tires not to mention that the foam would get all wet inside.
