I have come across a number of posts describing the use of contact cement to apply sheeting (balsa, 1/64 ply, F.G. sheet) to open framework structures like wings or former/stringer fuselages. Does anyone have experience with this method enough to recommend a technique and product? Does the cement get applied to the entire undersurface of the sheeting, or just in those areas where there will be contact between the framework and the sheeting.? If only to the contact area, how does one map out the exact location of the contact points (lines, or areas)? Thanks.............John

I have read where guys use 3M 77 to sheet balsa over FOAM wings, but never an open bay structure. I wouldn't do it. I like alphatic resin, Titebond 1. The beauty of this glue is if you goof and have a section of sheeting not firmly glued down, you can crank your monokote iron to high, and iron it back down.

Polyurethane (Gorrilla) glue... Plenty of time to position sheeting, expands to fill any gaps, easy to trim away any excess expansion....

Are you talking foam wings? Poly glue works great there, but I can't imagine anything but a mess using it on built up wings.

Personally, I wouldn't do it because once you touch the two sides together that is it. There is absolutely no room for error. With alphetic resin or gorilla glue you have plenty of working time to position parts just right before you leave them to dry.

I don't think I havve built a plane w/ a FULLY sheeted built-up wing, but plenty w/ partially sheeted (forward from spar to L/E). I pretty much always use poly (Gorrilla or competitive brand) glue for that purpose. When sheeting an open structure, you apply the glue to the structure, not the sheeting (if sheeting foam apply to the sheeting).
