I recently made a mold for Q500 V-Tail and am getting ready to layup the first tail. My initial thoughts on the lay-up schedule is as follows;

- paint mold with KlassKote paint
- 1 layer .56 oz cloth with west epoxy
- 1/32 balsa
- 1 layer of 1.5 oz cloth
- vacuum bag with each half, wih absorbant for excess epoxy
- trim edge
- install spars and other supports, install pushrods, cabosil edge and spar then join

target weight 2.5 oz. Any thoughts appreciated.

Kevin,
You are right on track. I have made entire wing skins in the same manner. I take it the mold is gelcoated and all partalled and mod release applied. The paint is going to be the finished coat? If so it should be fine. The .56 oz on the mold surface is perfect. I would suggest bump up to 1/16" balsa and drop down from 1.5 oz down to .75 oz. Better yet go .56 on mold then 1/16 balsa, then .56 and .75 on top. Use the peel-ply and breather cloth and vacuum bag and it will be light andstrong. Please post pictures of the process. I love this stuff.

Sounds about like what I do but I use 1/32" with .75oz inside and out with a strip of 1.4oz on the hinge line to stiffen it up a bit. This setup usually puts me around 2.25oz for total weight

I'm pretty close to the same also.

Dolphin Wax

2 light coats of PVA mist coated

one light coat of white klasskote gloss

3/4 oz on the outside, 1/32" CONTEST balsa core, 3/4 oz on the inside.

A 2 inch wide piece of 1.4 oz on the center of the V, top and bottom. I've tried carbon, kevlar, but glass is fine.

Hinge is .005 fiberglass sheet.

Main spar is 1/4" wide balsa.

Rear spar is 1/8" (this is behind the hinge line, towards the TE)

4/40 rods in aluminum sheeths for torque rods.

Mixture of laminating resin, colidial silica, and Micro balloons in a cake decorating bag to even out the spooge.

Weight between 2 - 2 1/2 oz
