I'm assembling this great looking F 18 arf from Hobby-Lobby. I've watched several videos on You Tube Can't wait to see how she does for myself. My question to anyone with this jet is: where does the battery go.... front bay?? and where does the receiver go? I'm assuming the rear bay area. Instruction book is very poor.
Any responses or feed back very much appreciated!

I have the pitts bipe and the parkzone fw-190 so this will be my first EDF foamie.

Thanks in Advance

I have this jet and I've flown it with the battery in the front bay and in the rear bay. It flies much better in the front bay. The CG in the "manual" is a mystery. Put it in the front bay and have fun!

I also have this GREAT little jet and fly it when I'm not flying my Kingcat. After experimenting with the battery, in both bays, I now have it in the forward bay and my little 2.4 receiver in the aft compartment. The slightly forward balance point makes the airframe handle, at slower speeds, much easier as well as inverted. Honestly, I was quite apprehensive about the performance of this little BUG, but can honestly say that the folks at Hobby Lobby go this one RIGHT! It really does fly very well and will do consecutive loops starting from level flight.

Thanks a bunch for both of your inputs! I've completed assembly and just as you stated it's just a tad nose heavy. I've installed a Futaba receiver, the R114F micro receiver from another plane and with a little foam wrap it's snug in the second bay without blocking air flow. I also thought the elevators were kinda flimsy so I installed a .070 size piece of carbon fiber rod into the hollowed out area the length of the horizontal surface. It stiffened them up nicely. I'm thinking about doing the same with the vertical stabs only of course using say .040 size.

Anyone tried to hand launch with gear in place..... or land in grass...... very curious on your flying areas!!

Also, I placed clevises in outer hole on elevators and middle hole on elevator servoes and outer hole on bellcrank. seems about right moderate throws do you agree??

Any tips on first flights?? THANKS FOR ADVICE

Alierons were, IMHO, rather insensitive and the elevators were a bit much. I don't remember exactally what my throws were, sorry, I actually made adjustments after my first flight as well.

Great plane. Battery in the front bay. Haven't tried a hand launch yet. It gets in the air pretty quick off pavement. I had started off with pretty mild throws in the beginning and have been adding more each flight with a little expo. It really has a very nice sink rate, flat glide and landings are a breeze. You'll love it. I'm looking forward to there F-16 that's due out soon. Mike

How well does this jet fly at slower speeds? I have the Hobby Lobby Corsair and the P-38 already and love those. I'm a pretty decent pilot but am a little nervous about a jet!

Can I get some input as to what you guys think about the landing and slower speed?

Thanks guys,
5150

The F-18 hangs on all day. I'm not sure about the F-16. I'll give a full report after they ship late August. Mike

Thanks for your reply. My update is that I'm having a ball with this F18 hornet! I decided to remove the landing gear after a few flights.I fly mostly in fields. For me it took away the drag and seemed to give it better flight response. The hand launching is great and easy, obviously into the wind or if dead calm doesn't seem to matter. I'm trying some high altitude rolls and inverted stuff but my hands get sweaty and I get little nervous at times! I'm still practicing approahes have had some nice flare on landing. I applied some packing tape to fuselage bottom at nose and mainly center section for added protection on landings like you said it just floats in!

I did have one small problem with one of the 3 batteries i bought. after a few flights the pack ballooned up. I called Hobby-Lobby they said I ran pack to low. i noticed 2 times until....I could figure out flight times the engine just cut out with no warning so now i time each flight at 6 minutes with varying throttle to protect batteries . Had to buy another one. Any suggestions on battery care or discharge time.

Thanks Again

Buy a good charger, It will help keep your batteries in top shape and measure your usage. This will help you determine flight time. I use a Hyperion ( 150.00) up to 5 cell but the Thunder Tiger up to 6 cells is really nice and can be had for about 129 bucks. It's the best investment you can make. Mike
