xism -> sport tuned motor in clod buster? (5/13/2008 4:26:21 AM)

i just got a super clod and is going to upgrade the motors. now, the tamiya sport tuned looks nice but how will they work? (one must be in reverse?) i have no idea about those motors maybe someone has some experiences? thnx ;)

i had one in my t3 for the longest time. it got alot of abuse and little care. and it ran till i pulled it out just recently to upgrade. so as far as longevity goes, i had great luck with mine, i'm just not sure what to recommend for your specific application though. if it needs to be reversed, you can just switch the wires, that's not a big deal. but whatever motors you're going with, if one needs to be reversed just make sure there's no timing advance on them (as in 0 degrees advance)

Sport Tuned motors have fixed advanced timing. It will not work with the Clod.

Hey Auto...can you explain what that means?

AutoXMan -> RE: sport tuned motor in clod buster? (5/13/2008 4:06:11 PM)

In simple terms a motor with advanced timing is slightly faster than the same motor with 0 degrees timing. However the advanced timing will run faster in forward than reverse. In a Clod, I am led to believe that the 2 motors have to be mounted in 2 separate directions. If sport tuned motors were used the one mounted in the forward direction would be running fine and dandy, however the other would be severely slower than the forward mounted one. Much slower than a regular ole silvercan.

A sport tuned motor is a 27 turn motor with advanced tioming (fixed) while the silvercans are 27 turn motors with 0° timing.

You can think of it this way, advanced timing = faster forward speed and lower reverse speed.

True.

When turning the endbell (the part the wires attach to) of the motor in relation to the motor can in one direction or the other you're changing the timing of the motor. Some motors like the stock silvercan motors that come with the Clod have 0 degrees timing. Other motors like the sport tuned have advanced timing. The problem is that when you advance the timing on a motor it's only advanced in one direction, which means when you drive in reverse the timing is retarded. (negative) With the Clod you have to run one motor running in forward rotation, and one in reverse rotation. Since the sport tuned motor is locked at 27 degrees advanced timing that means one motor will have 27 degrees advanced timing and the one running in reverse will have 27 degrees retarded timing. For that reason you must either get a motor with 0 degrees timing or adjustable timing.

yep, i was afraid of this :P thnx anyway ;) btw i believe the sport tuned is 23t not 27.... my clod camed with mabuchi 540 instead of the more powerful(?) johnson's. the bullhead came with the "4 slot johnson" - a more powerful motor. I could get the 540-J motors to my clod but i dont believe it will be that much faster

23 turns and 27 degrees of timing are two different things.

AutoXMan -> RE: sport tuned motor in clod buster? (5/14/2008 12:30:24 AM)

The sport tuned motor IS in fact a 27 turn motor with advanced timing.

well, the sport tuned motor comes with both 23 AND 27 turn... [:'(]

Maybe he is talking about the Tamiya RZ motors and such [&:] I have heard older sport tunes have been rumored to be 23 turns, but this was all speculation and it doesn't matter as all new ones are 27.

xism -> RE: sport tuned motor in clod buster? (5/14/2008 10:37:28 AM)

i googled, and finded some info at a forum... 23t is available in europe, and the 27t version in asia

also someone at ebay is selling a 23t version: http://tinyurl.com/4dscxf
