Is it normal for the Trex 450 V2's motor and ESC to become very hot after a flight? (not so hot that I can't touch it....but...)

I am running the stock motor and ESC that came with the kit with a 2200mAh Kong Power battery with flight times of around 7 min with just hovering and a few 8's.

Thanks for any feedback.

Some thing must be up, I get 10+ min with an 1800mah and the motor, ESC, as control are just warm. This is hovering and FF. What pinion are you using? Check for any drag in the mechanics.

I get over 8 minutes of flight on my Kong Power packs. I have an IR heat gun and post-flight temps are ~ 105F on the motor, ESC and LiPo. It sounds like something is wrong.

You need to be able to measure the actual temperature to get the best advice, though. Just saying that it is hot is really not enough information.

Is there a way to test the heat without buying a IR heat gun?

If you have a multimeter, you can buy a contact temperature probe...

An IR temp. detector can be had for as little as $30 if you look around.

I will try to get one of those...what should the temp be at? somewhere in the 105 range after flight?

The 430XL motor is highly inefficient and can get a bit warm. If you are past 140 on the motor something is wrong most likely gear mesh or your tail belt is too tight. 155+ will certainly start to deteriorate your motor magnets. Also make sure you ESC is uncoverted so it can cool. Another thing that makes a motor run hot is poor solder connections believe it or not.

10 minutes on an 1800mah lipo with that motor? List your setup please I am interested.

OK, well the esc is still covered, so I will uncover it. I am going to pick up a heat gun today to test the temp and also check the gear am pinion mesh.

Like I said, I can hold my fingures on the motor and esc but can definatelly tell that it is hot.

Thanks for your help.

an easy way to fix the gear mesh, or just check it is to run a strip of computer paper between them. So when you loosen your motor mount screws, place that strip of paper around the main gear and then moev the motor until you have a strong mesh but not so much that it rips the paper when you spin the gears.

No I didn't mean remove the heat shrink. I meant don't cover it with anything to hold it down.

Ok, the heat shrink is still on the ESC.
I picked up a IR Temp. gun at AutoZone for $19.99.

Just completed my first test with a 2200mAh battery, hovered for 7 min flat and here are the results:
(I scanned immediately after flight)

Battery - 95 degrees max
Motor - 135 degrees max
ESC - 160 degrees max

*(Max temperatures are indicated and decrease from that mark)

Please let me know if this is normal...Thanks

IMHO, the LiPo temperatures are fine, but your motor and especially the ESC are too hot. Again, on my 100% stock V2, motor temps after 8 min of hovering and slow FF are only 105F and that is with no heat sink on the motor. My ESC temps are right around 105F after flight as well.

On the ESC, you have the heat sink mounted so that the cooling fins are UP, right?

Tell us about the rest of your setup. What servos do you use? I'm just wonderng if the extra heat buildup might be due to the internal BEC...

The motor temps can probably be managed with a heat sink, but you definitely want to find out why it and the ESC are getting so hot. What are the outside temperatures when you have been flying?

I have completed a second test last night after rearranging the ESC wires to the motor and repositioning the pinion.

The results are:
Battery - 80 max
Motor - 100 max (heat sink added)
ESC - 135 highest
(8 min flight with basic hovering)

To answer your question BryFlyGuy67,
Heat sink is mounted up, in front of the heli (Finless Bob recommended setup)
I am running the HS-65 MG's on the cyclic.
Outside temp is 80 - 85 degrees

Also, I am running a linier pitch and throttle setup.

Thanks for all the feedback.

135 seems about what mine used to run let's get second opinions too. If it was a bad solder joint the battery and esc both would be hot just fyi.
