at home i use my fiance's hair dryer which is 1875watts but was looking at a 1000w heat gun both of which need a fairly expensive DC to AC inverter.

is there any way to get around this besides running at a place with AC power or a generator? i have acces to a small generator but it seems like a huge PITA to have it going/starting it for 1 hair dryer for 5 minutes...

I read somehwere that one of those tire-warmers work well to pre-heat your engine, and they run on batteries.

I've used a hot-water bottle before. Just a zip-loc bag full of hot water and sat it on the head. You can take hot water with you in a thermos.

My main question is why are you relying on heating the engine up so much? The only thing I've really thought of needing it has been during break-in, is your starter box not able to handle your motors pinch even after break-in so you have to heat it up?

Even after break-in for atleast the first gallon or so, the pinch puts a lot of stress on con rod and other internal engine parts. It helps to reduce the wear if your engine is up to temp before you start it.

Only time I heat mine, is when I want to start it outside in winter temps. Makes it a lot easier to start. But typically, once outside, I just try to start it quickly, or sometimes start it inside, and then take it outside, which usually meets with complaints.....LOL.

Anyway, he asked......and he got a few answers.............

my engine is 6 months old and i still warm it to get it to start easier. i usually leave the glow plug in for 3 to 5 minutes before starting, works most of the time when i thrash outdoors. doesn't work when its too cold though

How about a portable hairdryer that pugs into your car lighter socket? You might even be able to bodge it off your starter box battery:

Think outside what box?

if day temps are over 80 just leave it in the sun on the tarmac surrounding the track for about 10 mins.... where i live its hot year round and i tried this technique...works i guess.....the engine starts alot quicker, sometimes on the 5th pull, as compared to late in the evening

By pre-heating the engine with a heat gun or hair dryer you will extend the life of the engine than just starting it up from a cold start.. It creates less stress in the internal parts of the engine. I have try both and found pre-heating it is better but it is one more step to do when running at the track.. I live in FL and still pre-heat my engine all the time now..

true, luckily most tracks have power in the pits, but my problem lies when i need to go to a bash spot. i did find a few 12v hair dryers but of course the wattage is low so i wonder if they will provide enough heat to do the trick...

Lmfao.

I'm sure a bit of nitro and some matches would work. :]
