I`m a Tigermoth fan from way back and have built one or two in my time. Right now I`m toying with the idea of doing another. The last one I did was small, 44" span with an OS 20 fourstroke and flew great - I still have it out there.

The next one will be larger. I also happen to have a Flair 1/4 scale kit on the shelf, but am maybe losing interest. The size is OK, but feedback I`ve had from recent builders is that it is uneccesarily complicated and maybe over-engineered in places. I haven`t been game to open the box yet as I`m told I`d never get the bits packed back in......

Just recently I got to peruse a set of plans for the 72" Gordon Whitehead version. I must admit I`m quite impressed with the general design although I`m certainly not into electrics in a model this size.

Has anyone out there built and flown one of these and in a position to offer some first-hand knowledge.....

Thanks in advance,

Alan W

Hi Alan,

I have not built or flown Gordon's large tiger moth but I am building his small 48 in span version. Gordon's designs are pretty well know. I have several sets of plans for his smaller ships. My tiger is in the process of painting. Sorry I have no more info than that.

I built Gordon's 47" span TM years ago, and will definitely build another one.
It still flys today, though I sold it many years ago.
I recently finished Gordon's little Jungmeister - a delightful model.
You can't go wrong with his designs.

I have the Flair TM still in the box, it'll be started when I have more free time on my hand, it's a model that requires lots of attention and I'll really detail it as much as possible.

How about this TM, from David Boddington of the UK, another excellent designer:

I read the article a while back, it's very straightforward to build, but between the GW 47" plan, and the Flair kit, I doubt I'll build it but otherwise would have certainly gone for it.

I`m not au fait with the GW 47" Tigermoth mentioned here, but most impressed with the design of his larger 72" version. A modelling friend here has a Boddington one nearly completed, but I reckon the GW 72" is more impressive.

I still fly my own 44" design from time to time, OS 20 fourstroke powered, but the next one will be a lot bigger. I recently missed out on an old Pilot kit for their 1/4 scale version. That makes a nice looking model, but I`m not too fussed with their construction methods.

Many years ago I built one from the British 'Complete-a-Pac' plans. I think it was a little short of 60" span. That one was a practical design and simple straightforward build. It was powered with an old OS .60 Blackhead - before four stroke engines were readily available. It flew nicely too. I understand that design is still available in kit form ex Anglia Models in UK - ref www.AngliaMC@aol.com.
