DeviousDave -> Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 3:23:42 AM)

I'm asking because it seems that the "RR" in the motor I have stands for Reverse Rotation!

I found this motor in a clean but frozen state, and gave it to someone (a very modest "Someone"[;)] ) under the "Pennies from Heaven" program, but eventually it ended up back on my doorstep like a sack of abandoned kittens.[:(] The "Someone" I sent it to didn't have any luck getting it to run and felt badly about having it and not being able to run it and appreciate it, and felt it needed to go to someone who might like to have it.

Naturally, curiosity got the better of me and I took it apart. Hmm... needle passes fuel.. has good compression,... tank vents are clear.. Hmm. I bolted it back together to also admit defeat, stopping to flip it over a few times before tossing it in a corner. "I wonder if it's a vacuum leak?, nahh, not likely. Boy, this thing sure does sound anemic when you flip it over..." The angels sang from the heavens and a lightbulb lit in my Brain Housing Group. "Holy $#oke$ this thing has a reverse rotation drum in it!! Did they ever make these in a reverse running configuration????" I checked, and sure enough, the intake venturi sucks in with the motor turning backwards.

So there it is, are these motors supposed to run backwards, or do I have some kind of wierd-alice motor with an accessory part intake valve in it?

You have a weird one DD. They did make a reverse rotation drum for them-just like they made LH crankshafts for TD049s-but they would have been a 'special order only' item. The whole point of the RR-1 was that with the drum valve it wouldn't run backwards like the reed valve ones. I dare say a few people wanted to build twins or something with torque cancelling-the usual reason other than pusher use, for wanting reverse rotation motors. I have heard of reverse drums for the RR-1 cropping up from time to time-but they are certasinly a rare item.

How would this motor compare to a Black Widow, or T.D.? Or are we talking apples and pomegranates here?

combatpigg -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 4:50:49 AM)

DD, now you are committed to build a cool pusher plane!

DeviousDave -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 5:07:59 AM)

Aside from the Pushy Cat, have there ever been any cool pushes that would look good with an RR1 poking out the back?

Maybe a few cool WW1 bombers, but I can't think of their names..

If it weren't for the short run time, it would probably be fun to make a Fan Trainer for it!

combatpigg -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 5:13:27 AM)

There's a pusher pylon racer design on the tip of my tongue......[>:] I tried to build one many years ago and it was too tail heavy. It was a published plan.....swept wing like a GLH.....

Got it, it's the "TD SPECIAL". Looks pretty cool, maybe a little big.
Anyone here ever build one and fly it?

RocketRob -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 5:36:27 AM)

Spencer Air Car just google it[;)]

Ok a Republic SeaBee

Toad -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 1:27:45 PM)

Yes, I have owned/flown a T.D. Special
They fly great, pretty much like a foam winged GLH, a bit faster.
There is a guy that will still show up at the 1/2a races out here once in a while with one. Very Cool, his plane and engine must be 30+yrs old now and still going.

combatpigg -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 1:31:18 PM)

That sounds encouraging. I've toyed with the idea of building an updated version.

Toad -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 1:33:12 PM)

Here it is

combatpigg -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 1:46:43 PM)

Thanks Toad, I tucked that photo away for future reference.
Here is a SWR I built a few years ago, still have it.

IIRC, the author of the TD special article gave a bunch of highly scientific reasons for why he designed the plane to look the way it does, instead of the simple truth that "it looks cool [8D]".

proptop -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 2:51:00 PM)

Reminds me of the time with a TD .049 in my friends Upstart...
We couldn't get the doggone thing to start with the elec. starter...cranking and cranking away...checking everything...so just for the heck of it I sez "let me flip it backwards...maybe that'll clear it out or sumpthin'"...and off she went...[:D]
Somehow he'd gotten one with a rev. rotation crank?

digital_trucker -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 3:18:03 PM)

One plus for reed valve induction!

JCT049 -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 8:50:31 PM)

I thought the RR1 stood for "Rear Rotor" not reverse rotation. The ones I have seen in the past ran better that a Golden Bee.

fritzke -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 10:24:30 PM)

That would be the very rare RRRR1, "rear rotor reverse rotation",
and a bit of onomatopoeia for the sound it makes, "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"
[:D]

Jim Thomerson -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/14/2008 11:22:13 PM)

I vaguely remember a plan in Flying Models, for an RC airplane which had two RR1's mounted on a pylon, one pushing, the other pulling. I'll see if I can find it.

Hmm... that's got my interest! I had me a GLH a while back, it was my first proper pylon racer. Absolutely loved it-the airframe lasted until the firewall separated inside the fuse after a year or two and I couldn't leech enough of the oil back out of it to epoxy it back in. I miss it... Maybe a TD Special is in my future!

I'm betting that she's timed for 5-6" props rather than the smaller stuff used these days.. If it could hit 20k on a 5-3, I'd be well impressed!

lildiesel -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/15/2008 12:29:16 AM)

The last two pusher fighters used by the RAF in WW1 would work for scale projects. The de Haviland DH-2 and the F.E. 2B.
I recall a very nice set of plans for a DH-2 in Flying Scale Models some time ago.

Dan Vincent -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/15/2008 4:15:16 AM)

CP, are you talking about the Miller special pusher type midget Gooyear racers?

Texas Gem and Pushy Cat were two of them.

combatpigg -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/15/2008 4:39:52 AM)

Dan, thanks for showing that one! It's gorgeous. The T tail and scalloped tail boom would take some figuring for a 1/2A model....features like that can get pretty heavy pretty quick unless done real clever.

Devious Dave has his work cut out now.........

Dan Vincent -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/15/2008 4:56:36 AM)

Yeah, almost have to make it from fiberglass like the "T" Tail on the "Rivets."

My father knew Bill Falk, who raced the Rivets. Bill ran the Warwick, NY airport.

I was a kid when I first saw "Rivets" and it was so small I had my doubts that it would actually fly.

But fly it did, and very fast.

HighPlains -> RE: Anyone ever run an RR1? (5/15/2008 5:14:13 AM)

I got one as a kid some 44 years ago. I think it ran pretty well on a 6-4 with the racing fuel. I know it drugged a Scientific log cabin around the circle with ease with enough power to do wing-overs and loops. I don't remember for certain, but I thought the rotor had two holes for the drive pin so you could make it run either way.

I've lost track of my RR-1, too many moves and perhaps a nephew liked the looks of it, or I would take it apart to see.
