Status: offline 		I'm asking because it seems that the "RR" in the motor I have stands for Reverse Rotation!

I found this motor in a clean but frozen state, and gave it to someone (a very modest "Someone" ) under the "Pennies from Heaven" program, but eventually it ended up back on my doorstep like a sack of abandoned kittens. The "Someone" I sent it to didn't have any luck getting it to run and felt badly about having it and not being able to run it and appreciate it, and felt it needed to go to someone who might like to have it.

Naturally, curiosity got the better of me and I took it apart. Hmm... needle passes fuel.. has good compression,... tank vents are clear.. Hmm. I bolted it back together to also admit defeat, stopping to flip it over a few times before tossing it in a corner. "I wonder if it's a vacuum leak?, nahh, not likely. Boy, this thing sure does sound anemic when you flip it over..." The angels sang from the heavens and a lightbulb lit in my Brain Housing Group. "Holy $#oke$ this thing has a reverse rotation drum in it!! Did they ever make these in a reverse running configuration????" I checked, and sure enough, the intake venturi sucks in with the motor turning backwards.

So there it is, are these motors supposed to run backwards, or do I have some kind of wierd-alice motor with an accessory part intake valve in it?

Status: online 		You have a weird one DD. They did make a reverse rotation drum for them-just like they made LH crankshafts for TD049s-but they would have been a 'special order only' item. The whole point of the RR-1 was that with the drum valve it wouldn't run backwards like the reed valve ones. I dare say a few people wanted to build twins or something with torque cancelling-the usual reason other than pusher use, for wanting reverse rotation motors. I have heard of reverse drums for the RR-1 cropping up from time to time-but they are certasinly a rare item.

Status: offline 		Aside from the Pushy Cat, have there ever been any cool pushes that would look good with an RR1 poking out the back?

Maybe a few cool WW1 bombers, but I can't think of their names..

If it weren't for the short run time, it would probably be fun to make a Fan Trainer for it!

Status: offline 		There's a pusher pylon racer design on the tip of my tongue...... I tried to build one many years ago and it was too tail heavy. It was a published plan.....swept wing like a GLH.....

Got it, it's the "TD SPECIAL". Looks pretty cool, maybe a little big.
Anyone here ever build one and fly it?

They fly great, pretty much like a foam winged GLH, a bit faster.
There is a guy that will still show up at the 1/2a races out here once in a while with one. Very Cool, his plane and engine must be 30+yrs old now and still going.

Here is a SWR I built a few years ago, still have it.

IIRC, the author of the TD special article gave a bunch of highly scientific reasons for why he designed the plane to look the way it does, instead of the simple truth that "it looks cool ".

We couldn't get the doggone thing to start with the elec. starter...cranking and cranking away...checking everything...so just for the heck of it I sez "let me flip it backwards...maybe that'll clear it out or sumpthin'"...and off she went...
Somehow he'd gotten one with a rev. rotation crank?

Status: offline 		I thought the RR1 stood for "Rear Rotor" not reverse rotation. The ones I have seen in the past ran better that a Golden Bee.

and a bit of onomatopoeia for the sound it makes, "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

Status: offline 		I vaguely remember a plan in Flying Models, for an RC airplane which had two RR1's mounted on a pylon, one pushing, the other pulling. I'll see if I can find it.
