I'm just finishing up a Sig four star 120 and sans the canopy, pilot, and any fuel residue the ship balances a tiny bit aft of the 4.5 inches from the leading egde which is recommended as the maximum rearward position for the center of gravity. To all the four star flyers out there, how sensitive is this bird when a bit tail heavy?

I should point out I'm a decently skilled flyer having progressed from a slow stick to electric sailplanes to a senior telemaster and now the fourstar. I tend to like my sail planes a bit tail heavy (or to the rearward limit) to help slow them down for thermal seeking.

This bird is powered by a st G2300 which should supply more than enough power for my flying style.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks,
Rich

I've flown two 4*60's. My suggestion is to not go tail heavy, but a tad nose heavy. This series of planes float something awful on landing. You end up with some really slow speed and you wouldn't want it dropping a tail at that point. Balance it per the instructions and you'll be happy. Error on nose heavy.

Bigshark Campgems is right !!!! Definitley go a little nose heavy. I've also had two 4*s & they WILL float on landing. I've actually floated a 4* 60 (in the same place) in a 15 knot head wind while idling the motor. There are not too many birds that you can do that with !! "Dumb thumbs ended both before their time. I WILL be getting another. The 4* makes for the most relaxed flying you can do!!

Thanks for the replys. I'll have to try to move the battery around and do without a pilot. I hate having to add dead weight to a bird. I figured with the 140 sized motor, a cowl, and big spinner, I'd be ok.........

BigShark, look at your choice of props also from a weight standpoint. I was balancing out a model the other day and I had two 13x4 props in hand, an APC 14x4W and Zinger 14x4 square tip. The APC was ove 1/2 Oz heaver than the Zinger. I had planed to use the APC anyway, but balanced with the Zinger for safety sake incase I needed to use it later.

Just something to keep in mind. A 1/2 oz is a lot at the end of the motor.
