Pete737 -> Need a little help please?? Piper cub rudder (5/14/2008 11:52:27 PM)

I just bought a PNP 40 hanger 9 piper cub. I was just finishing installation of the landing gear when I noticed that the rudder was broken. The 4th rib down is broken and the covering is kind of crumpled. No better time to make a first repair. Im pretty handy but have never attempted a repar before, Can I just use epoxy to rebuild the ruder balsa? It was a clean break. Then how do I reattach the covering assuming I make a nice clean cut.

Thanks, Peter

If it is a clean break, then yes, epoxy would work to fix the broken balsa. As for the covering, I would reccomend getting a roll of yellow covering as you will most likeley need it in the future to fix small holes.. if you want a quick fix, a piece of clear packing tape over the incision would also work..

If you can detect exactly the place where the broken part is, you may use a syringe with thin CA and inject it from the outside with out cutting the covering, there will be only a tiny hole left which could be covered with a small piece of clear packaging tape. Beware to inject only trough the covering and not from wood parts as the syringe could be glued permanently to a wood part.

wait!!! if this is your first repair, does that mean you have never flown another plane? if you have never flown a trainer please don't fly this plane, the cub is not a substitute for a trainer in any way!
if you have plenty of prior experience, please carry on.

I'm glad someone pointed out that a cub is not a trainer... Nice to see some people are learning...

pete,
fozjared is 100% correct (take it from me as I have had a good deal of bad experiances with a cub) about the cub not being a good trainer. Reply back with some info on what lead to the purchase of the J3 such as what you have flown before etc. Keep in mind that a J3 is fine once airborn, its the getting up and back down that is the real treat. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong at least once, I can promise you that. Unless you have had lots of hours in.

Yea, I can remember making a few small repairs to my old trainer, which I still do have in all it's glory.
