Hi guys

I am currently building a scale down Global Hawk. It has a 5m WS and 2m L. I will have problems transporting this glider around so i decided to make the wings detachable from the fuselage. However, this may compromise the strength.

I have yet to think of how to hold the wings strong to the fuselage as much as dismantling the wings easily.

Carbon rods and tubes will be inserted in between the wings. This rc global hawk will be around 2kg of total weight. I will try not to use any metal material.

Any help?

Consider using a method similar to that used on some Comp Arf products where a blade spar and interior wing retention screws are utilized. Each wing has it's own blade spar, each slightly offset from the other wing just enough that they can pass by the other but have spar face to spar face contact inside the fuselage. Bolt the two together inside the fuselage for maximum strength and rigidity.

Another option is to use a wing box inside the fuselage where the wings are inserted.

I am very new into this so i have much more to learn from you guys.

Do you have some pictures on the blade spar and interior wing retention screws and the wing box?

The wing's tip chord is 114.7mm and Root chord is 314.2mm. I will most likely be using more than 1 blade spar on each side of the wings.

How about carbon fibre tubes or rods? Will they do better?

The tubes would be nice but how will you secure them?? Blade spars are nice because you can drill a pair of holes in each spar that match up and bolt them together using wing nuts and a 1/4-20 or equal bolt. Makes life too easy. You just have to offset them enough in each wing to enable them to make fore and aft contact between the pair. Check out the Comp Arf websites to see some of the blade spars. Some of the older built up giant scale designs used the same arrangement. Once installed it's impossible for them to go anywhere and they provide a lot of strength. All you need is an additional anti rotation pin at the aft edge of the wing to maintain trailing edge positions. A small diameter (1/2" carbon tube joining the wing halves would do the job just as effectively.
