I had an ooops landing my Typhoon dead stick. I was concentrating on getting it on the ground, and neglected to notice I was drifting away from center of runway and rolled through a couple of bushes at the end of the runway, shearing the wings off and breaking the tail feathers. Damage done was considerable, but repairable. This thread will document my attempt at a good, straight repair.

First, the easy items. The rudder has a chunk out of it. After cutting it off, the repair is pretty simple. Cut away the damaged sheeting, glue supports for new sheeting, and re-sheet damaged area.

The stab tube was dislodged in the right stab and the sheeting was split top and bottom from the trailing edge. I carefully cut and removed the bottom sheeting below the stab tube, reglued the top sheeting to the trailing edge, and re-positioned and glued the tube back in place. After this, I replaced the original bottom sheeting. After this repair is complete, I will sand, glass and repaint the damaged areas of the stab, but this will get me back in the air quickly.

For the most part, the fin was a clean break. Using polyurethane glue (Gorilla Glue), I used an epoxy brush and coated each surface that broke inside the fin. I then pulled fin back together. To hold the fin straight, I fashioned 2 flexible spars that I could use to clamp the fin without damage. The spars are constructed of 1/16" x 1" sheeting and 2 - 1/4" square sticks. This provides a rigid spar that is still flexible to accomodate the natural curve of the fin.

This plane has had a twist since I purchased it last year. You can even see it in the second pic. I was able to remove most of the twist in the tail by using some blocks of balsa and tape to attempt to straighten the vertical stab. It is now much closer to straight.

Once glued together, simply sand, glass, and paint.

Now repairing the fuse is a bit harder. The wings were ripped off the sides of the fuse doing a fair bit of damage. Fortunately, the wings were relatively undamaged. The had a dent (minor) in each leading edge, and rear wing adjuster tube on the left wing was pulled from the wing. A little glue and they are good as new.

I cut away the damaged area from the top 1/4" fuse stringer to the bottom fuse stringer. Then I added new ply doublers for the wing tube and adjusters. Then reinforced the former joints with 1/8" square balsa stock. Finally, a run of 1/4" triangle stock top and bottom for a good surface to glue new fuse sheeting to. The 1/4" triangle stock is about 1/64" further out so I sand the new sheeting down to original sheeting.

I made the mistake of attempting to use the original front wing adjusters to position wing back in its original location. This was a failure of monumental proportions. The wing originally installed with a lean to the left. So I started from scratch by leveling the stab (left to right and front to back), the installing wing at +.5 degrees to the stab.

Next, sand and glass the fuse sides and any where else I burned through the original glass while sanding.

Then a test assembly of all control surfaces. Trimming flights tomorrow morning to get ready for contests.


That's it for now. Total repair time so far: 5 days. Got a contest this weekend in Albuquerque, NM and the following weekend in Oakdale, CA. Once I get back, I'll final sand, prime and paint.

Before I forget, I need to thank Troy Newman for all his help, guidance, and supplies. I would have never gotten this far, this quickly without his assistance. I'm sure he's tired of me calling 3-4 times a day to ask questions. :-) I'll make it up to you.

Robert - Great job! It just goes to show what you can do with some determination! After the initial depression wears off you can really repair most damage.

Robert, Off roading again? Shame on you. Now look at what you've done. Kidding. Nice repair job. Your not coming to Hemet? Hope to see you in Oakdale.

OffRoading is exactly what caused this damage. :-) I'll get the hang of landing eventually. Troy and I are going to ABQ instead of Hemet. Weather looks like it will be great there. Looking forward to Oakdale too. See ya there.

Most people would have scrapped a plane with damage like that. Nice work!!!
