Default New YS DZ170 cdi

Here is the first information of a new YS DZ170 cdi engine. It is not a gas engine.

Interesting!

Can't see it having a market place in F3a though due to the extra weight of the cdi unit, however maybe the 3d guy's may find it more useful.

Andy.

It will be nice to see some reports. Fuel savings will be great. We also need to check the power since there are a lot more BTU in nitro fuel compared with gasoline fuels. In any event, it is very nice to see this new option.

Thanks for let us know,

It is not a gas engine
What is it then? a glow engine with spark?
CDi...maybe the 'd' means diesel?!! (well it does on a mercedes benz!)

Any more info on what it is exactly?

Troy,

I guess that they are getting more power by getting the exact spark timing in all conditions. It is nice to see all this new developments.

Thanks,

Jason,

This is exactly a glow engine. CDI enables driving with a thin air-fuel mixture. So it does not need much fuel than normal DZ170.

Not sure how they can top the performance and reliability of the 160-170DZ, but one thing I hear is that it's supposed to cure the dreaded DZ kick. And of course doesn't require a glow igniter which is neat.

I want one! LOL

Hi all

Stéphane Carrier (same club) uses this engine on his Intégral.
Fuel used is méthanol, nitro (25%) and oil (only 7 %).
So 170 DZ cdi is more power than 170DZ glow (there is much methanol).
With the same quantity of fuel, flight lasts 20 mn instead of 10 mn. So it is cheaper.
Plane is clean because less oil.
We don't see smoke during the flight.
This engine has a spark given by a batterie and set by electronic.
I saw flights F09 with this engine, it's awesome. Steph don't use all the power to do them.
Regards

The web-site that I showed is reporting that conversion kit is available for present DZ 170 and DZ 160. The list price is about 24000 yen (230 dollars). And YS plans to start selling DZ 170 cdi in this September.

Neat. Spark ignition on a Nitromethane fueled model airplane motor is nothing new. Just look at any "antique" model engine collection. What would be nice with the new stuff is if you could change the spark curve to accomodate different fuels and props. Right now you can only do that (in a less granular fashion) with head shims and different glow plugs. Maybe it really (finally) is the "digital age"...

Just FYI...

This version won't work with a nose-ring however due to the hall sensor on the front bearing housing. What interests me about this is the chance maybe to reduce the nitro content and hence the cost of the fuel...

Here is a very low res picture of the system Hanson was running about 10 years ago. This
was on a two stroke 140. Power on 5% nitro and spark ignition was about the same as
25% nitro with a glow plug. Of course you could optimize for whatever level of nitro
you are willing to pay for.

ORIGINAL: aerobear

CDI = Capacitive Discharge Ignition
The in use advantage over straight glow was very noticable - but -some pattern ex spurts simply poo pooed it
anyway - with the advent of good , inexpensive Chinese ignitions - (the one pictured was a design Al Deim and I worked out -a seperate coil setup), I would take this over any overpriced so called injection setup
On the inexpensive ST2300 this turned 18x8 prop APC - very hard -9000 -on a simple tuned can . If it had cost a LOT more -it probably would have caught on.
It was very smooth running with a tick over, dependable idle and perfect transition.-on 5% nitro.
By the way there are less BTU in the alky fuel -than gasoline - The added power is from burning MORE fuel with LESS air.
the ratios are -if anyone really cares 13-1 on a fat gasoline setup to 5-1 on typical alky setup
figures by weight .
cooler running - les critical needle etc.,etc.,
