Depends how much he drives in the city, if his car is turned on for a long time slowly moving in traffic then it will run out of power and switch to petrol, in which case it will not do many miles per gallon at all, if he only drives it for a short period of time (very slowly) then he may reach 40

Ok for some reason people don't know how the prius works . first it makes it's own power so it's not a plug in. two this thing gets over 50 MPG in the city no car in the united states that is not a hybrid can get that other then the VW diesel but that is 50 MPG on the highway. The prius has more tecnolgy then the BMW and is a more problem free car then any bmw. also the resale of a prius is so much better then the BMW. I don't care for honda at all way to small. Like I said before the escape hybrid is a great buy. Like I think gas is at $3.77 a gallon around me and on it's way to $5.00 a gallon so I don't think it's about looking cool as it would be a smart thing to buy. If you have an SUV or truck it ant worth crap now. if they get the prius and they let you drive it you can cruise the hood a lot cheaper then your other buds. So you will be the cool one because you can ride around all weekend for $25.00 .

Not saying everything in that article is right but i dont belive everything in its wrong either. THere is a taxi in New York that had over 400k miles and still going... Which kinda belows the 100k number away. Honestly car companyes just need to start making 30+ mpg CITY cars AGAIN... My Civic HX can do it along with someone i work with mazada 626 i think. Both where made in 97.

Yes, but you got to realize that Americans like everything supersized, so the new generations of Civics have grown larger, and consequently, gained weight.

Now please excuse me while I drive across town to pump in another 18 gallons of gas in my 8MPG truck.

Went to the dealer today and they test drove it (me in the car too). It's actually pretty roomy but it's scary. You don't know if the car is on or not It will be on a boat in Japan heading to the dealer soon.

not to be mean or anything but they are looking for a good car. Not an old, used car. They don't buy used cars. And the prius appears to be very reliable, have all the features they want, and beat the gas mileage in others by far.

The Prius and any other elect/hybrid vehicle are all about the "O's" not about the gas milage, what I mean about that is the amount of pollutants they puts out [there is a classification for that].In city traffic they do great to some degree but if you live out and drive in to town they dont.As far as repairs anything that is drivetrain related its covered under warranty. And anything now days as far as Toyota is concerned is replaced never rebuilt, disposable society we live in.Although today cars are pretty well built and I wouldnt hesitate buying a newer 2004 + car/truck that I see that has been taken care of that has over a 100k on it.Now 15-20 yars ago with older manufacturing technology I wouldnt think of it.Remember? A internal combustion engine is an instrument of its own destruction ,but with todays technology that has change a bit due to closer tolerances, better and lighter materials and etc,,,.Toyota makes a great car as does Honda and Nissan. The old joke at one time was "Do you know what Toyata stands for?"

Auto Great cars, well engineered and once you worked on one you worked on them all.

BTW if you dont know how to work on a hybrid DONT! Some of them push out well over 500V when operating.Read the tags which say "Death may occur."

Hey thats cool he's a electrical engineer, wait until the warranty is up then mess with it.It is a really neat design, especially the newer ones.2 big electrical motors in the trans/drive unit hooked up to a planetary gear all efficiently controlled by the ecu and that controller that sits on top[$$$!!]Plus the way the cooling system works with preheaters and all,and that huge 24 bank nimh battery pack[$3G's],dang they're heavy!Totally different animal that car is.The 1.5L Atkinson timing variable valve engine is pretty cool to boot, although its basically the same as all their other 4cyl cars.Theres really not much to do but drive them[kind'a different at first] and follow the required upkeep schedule, when something goes wrong take to Toyota.Thats basically what we do with all new cars now days, theoretically that is.But alot of people drive cars into the ground until theres nothin but a roof left or try to fix it themselves and destroy them, bad for them -good for me[$$] .Your parents are making a very wise and sensible purchase, the time is now.Especially the way the gas prices are skyrocketing pretty soon in the not so distant future these dealerships wont be able to give a SUV or truck away and neither the people who wait and want to switch. But,,,I bet they [Dealers] will shoot the price of hybrids and compacts up astronomically, gouge you and I they will . Ohwell nuff of a long reply.

Funny thing, just talked to a friend about the subject. The amount he's payin for his truck, insurance, upkeep and gas if he switched right now and traded in for a prius or even a compact non hybrid he could actually pay himself monthly with the difference in gas $$ saved[$60 a week minimum difference].Hmmm,,,,

Skip the Prius and just get the Toyota Corolla. 32-36mpg and runs well. I did the research and you will save a ton of money in the long run!!! I have also heard that these cars are good up to 300k miles. If you take care of them. No joke the Prius is LAME!

The corolla looks like a rolling washing machine, no design, makes me sick

You also have to remember that that is EPA mileage which isn't all that accurate. My dad had a hyundai elantra and that was rated at 32 I believe and he was only getting 22 and that was on highways.

Im all about conservation and am actually looking at a Civic Hybrid (40mpg city/45 hwy) but I would never drive a dorky looking prius. I am all for the hybrid concept but did they really have to make the prius so ugly and girly.

The current civics get that gas mileage you state, why do you say again?

they are not they are only 25/36.
http://automobiles.honda.com/civic-coupe/environment.aspx

and mine is 31/39 and it is possiable to get higher milage on that car. '97 Civic HX is the model.

my now-ex girlfriend's '07 Civic averages 33 mpg, all city driving. Auto, 4 door, very lame car like ALL Civics, but very fuel efficient.

The Prius takes 4 times more natural resources to build than a Hummer H2 or a Suburban. It's also barely more fuel efficient than a TDI VW Jetta/Golf, and quite a bit pricier.

The Prius is easily the WORST car one can buy IMO.

I'll continue driving my 14mpg Jeep, tyvm.

The natural resource deal is such a skewed load of BS. I read that article before and its a load of bunk.
