I just discovered this place last week and visited again today to get some pictures to share with you.

It's 12.8 miles from my house, door to helipad.

There's a small group of guys, about ten of them, mostly planes that meet on the weekends.
The rest of the time it's open and empty.
From what I understand there's only one electric heli guy besides me and one or two who have gas powered heli's.

As you can see in the pictures I had the place to myself today. It was late afternoon and after flying one battery I decided it was a little too windy for my liking. I guess I'll have to get up a little earlier in the morning on my days off. It's usually very calm until about 11am.

It's a little hard to see, because of the bright clouds, but beyond the valley and the tree covered mountains is the Gore Range.
That mountain range towers above tree level up to 14,000 ft and is snow capped most of the year.
Quite a spectacular view if I do say so myself.

So, I hope you enjoy these pictures.
For those of you that have a local flying field please feel free to post some pictures of it.
I'd like to see what some other fields look like and I'm sure others would to.

Ray,

First off, Avon is a beautiful area.. Secondly, we are all jealous. You have an amazing field to fly, never busy. Holy Cow, fantastic.
Stock up on some batteries and you'd be there all day, I know I would.

Normally, my flying field is my back yard. Sometimes the local park, 1 mile away. But it has to be early in the morning.

I'm south of Indianapolis about 12 miles south, with elevation of about 740 feet. At your elevation, it would take me days to adjust at that altitude, just to breath.

Take care, Hope ya got your heat problem under control on the B400,

Dave / Choppersrule

I have been wanting to go to my local flying field for awhile, but have been too busy to go. I talked to the president of it and he flies a nitro helicopter and there is another that flies a T-Rex 450. Then I guess he said there is a lot of people that fly CX-2 in the club house like building. But the rest of them fly airplanes. I have seen pictures of my local flying field and it looks pretty cool. They have a big paved runway, a grass one that is beside that, then there is a pond for people that have planes with floats. It is cool that your flying field as a heli pad.

Bry,

From what I've been told there is no membership, no fees and no rules (other than don't be a jerk).
I've been talking to a guy who has flown there for years and meets with the group on Sunday mornings.
He's told me that basically one guy set everything up, built the tables and put the money into it.
The field is on county property and this guy, who I hope to meet on Sunday, got the county to grade the area for the runway.
A lot of things around here are like that, pretty unofficial...it's still the wild west.

Dave,

Definately no heat problems when I fly in the morning and it's 48 degrees outside.
After hovering for almost 6 minutes my ESC was 57F.
I have also vented the canopy and after switching to HS65's my temps are not bad (105-115F) even inside at 78F ambient.
That's just hovering with very little movement.
BTW, don't worry I'm an emergency 1st responder at my night job.
I'm qualified to administer oxygen.

Nick/evdreamer,

Now that sounds like an official flying club.
Also sounds expensive, but I'd love to see some pics one day if you can.

Thanks to all for the nice words and comments.

I'd love to live somewhere like that, that's beautiful country!
What are those little balls on your skids, and the little tail on the vertical fin?
Wondering if thats something I should be adding to Blade 400.

I think it costs $75 a year, but if I could me some great people and have fun I think it would be worth it. There are a lot of safety rules that need to be followed there. Here is a link to a sky view of the field. http://www.lincolnskyknights.org/index_files/page0003.html I think the president there said there were a 100+ fliers there.

You Suck!

You have a wonderful place. I could go there with a chair and watch the birds, bugs and helis all day. I miss NY and the great hills, state parks, and twisty roads. Here in central Ohio it is flat and boring. My local club is built on an old landfill but it does come complete with a rubber mat heli pad, old shed and new this year, Porta John! We had a ridding mower, but someone stole it this year. Guess we will have to cut the grass inverted!

Max, thanks for the good words. LOL

woody,

The yellow balls on the skids are skid stops or skid savers.
They prevent the struts from wearing and also stop the heli from spinning on spool up.
They are a little sticky and make takeoff and landings a little more tricky.
I also added a little tail stinger to help keep the tail blades from striking the ground.
The blades and grip setup I'm using is longer than stock.

Nick,

Very impressive place, thanks for the link.
I even read the rules out of curiosity.
Funny, there are multiple "unofficial" gun ranges around here...no rules there either.
As long as nobody gets killed.

Okay Ray. Your email the other day whetted my appitite. Now your photos have me salivating!
If you want any company Sunday let me know when & where to meet. It's not even supposed to snow!!

>>>>>

Evdreamer - Went to your field. Wow, wide open spaces. Anything flat around here is at a premium..either already built on or prices only oil execs can afford.
There are definitely trade-offs, and a price for living in the mountains.

Looked at the LSK photo gallery too. Those guys are flying some nice planes.
One question, they say in the rules: "For your own safety, receivers should be narrow-band as well." Why is that?

Nick

I really like going up to the mountains by Denver to see my cousins. I like those planes in the pictures too. I guess once a year they go to a small airport for the day and can fly their RC jets. I can only dream about something in that price range. The jetcopter would also be fun to fly. I have no idea why that is in the rules. I assume it is talking about 72Mhz and I fly with 2.4Ghz so I don't worry about it. I finally got a weekend off so I am going to fly my Super CUB at a local soccer field. I haven't flown it in a few weeks and had a blast the last time a flew it.

Now that Ray has found this new field, and will be rubbing shoulders with fixed-wings, he'll be getting into nitros and turbines someday, lol. There's some pretty impressive jet videos on Utube, even turbine helis. Fun to watch. Do you have a photo of your CUB?

Ray & I aren't all that far from Denver, he's a little farther. Let us know when you're in the neighborhood visiting your cousins. I'm sure he'd like to show you this field.

Nick
