So, I own a nitro ST (Nitro Evader to be exact), and while it has been a good little truck, some guys in the family have purchased a few revo's, which of course forces me to upgrade.

I originally was looking at the savage x 4.6 rtr, however the new technology with the revo just can't be passed up I don't think, with the new shock design and everything. My only concern, as with all nitro's, is the strength of the tranny gears and diff. I know the newest savage has metal/steel tranny gears and diff gears, however I havn't heard or seen much about it with the Revo. I know the Revo has nylon/plastic tranny gears, and am just concerned if they hold up, though I haven't heard anything otherwise.

My last thought is the newest truck from durarax, the RT-X, but I haven't heard much talk about it other than the one thread so probably won't go that route.

I understand Savage is more of a basher, and Revo more of a racer, but moving beyond that, I'm primarily concerned with overall drivetrain strength. I also don't like how low the Revo sits, even when it's put up to its higher position, but I think that's something I'll need to live with.

Anyway, from the pro's that own or have experience with both (or all three), if you could only live with one of the trucks, which would it be? Please leave all "traxxas rules HPI sucks" for other threads. Thanks!

TO me sounds like you want to race.
You didnt mention no budget so the new revo platinum looks real nice.
And I have heard of no problems with the tranny

Not sure on racing at the moment, but it's an option. Either way though, I could race. I'm sure my local tracks have a Savage class. If I was going to race, I would probably race the Evader or pick up a truggy anyway.. not sure at the moment.

Well to help you out with the drive train ques.. I have the 2.5 version and have owned it for about 5 years or so. In that time I managed to only break one of the stock drive shafts(well I let my newb freind drive during a snowstorm.. Of course he crashed into a huge pile of snow...). The tranny holds up great as long as you have the slipper clutch set right. I think I've only stripped 2 spur gears in that time also. The whole idea of it sitting low can be adjusted but the savage is really top heavy and can not handle a corner or turn like a revo can. I know your probably thinking the revo cannot climb over too many objects due to it sitting lower but the articulation the suspension allows makes up for it. So it can climb over more then you might think. Also it can be set higher to aquire the needed clearence. If you read through these, you should feel a little better about the ride height situation.

Nitrovenom covered what I was going to say and said it much better lol
As long as you dont have a big block and a lead trigger finger the tranny will hold up on the revo.

I have both the Savage and a Revo, and I prefer the Revo over the savage. As for the driveline, the weakest link for me was the top shalf gear for the 2 speed. Good news is mine lasted through the first stock motor easy and almost through a complete big block engine till it finially gave way. You can just upgrade it to steel and then never look back. If you set your slipper up right you will probably not have any real issues with the tranny. Just make sure you set your reverse up right too. One thing alot of people really never consider about a driveline on a 4 wheel drive truck is a center diff will take off alot of the punishing load from the tranny. The revo has that option to trade out the reverse for a center diff. Most do it for racing, but it will help unload your driveline and can save it if your slipper is over tightened. With the savage I would eat those dog bone axles really fast. For some reason the metal just wears fast at the joints, I even upgraded them to the highest end ones HPI made and greased them, still ate them up too fast for me. It really wasnt the driveline that made me switch over to the revo, there is alot more to it then that.
