i bought a Goodrich Extra 300S with a 66 inch wing span. It has a problem of nosing over during taxiing since the wheels are about an inch an a half behind the leading edge of the wing. I was able to fly it successfully a few times last week. Today I had problems with the rudder shimmying. It had a gap in the rudder, so we put tape in the gap and some of the shimmying was reduced. I hesitate to use the word flutter since there was no noise ant it wasn't severe. After we fixed it, I could grab the rudder and get a little play, but it was flying ok so I decided to keep on flying. I was doing touch and go's and on the last landing I felt I was too high so I decided to abort the landing and go around. The engine died as I advanced the throttle, so I was forced to land. It bounced once and when it came down, the landing gear caught on the ground and broke off. Really, this was a good thing since it will be very easy to move the landing gear forward and reduce the nose overs. When I got home from the field, I looked at the control rod for the rudder. It is a wooden dowel with rods on the end to fit in the control horns. I moved the rudder and the dowel bows a little bit before the control horn moves on the servo. This is the problem with the shimmying. I want to replace the control rod, but what do I use? Do I go with a 4-40 rod with or without a plastic sleeve or do I make another dowel and make sure it is less flexible. If I use the sleeve, I have to cut into the back so I can glue the sleeve in the front and back. Is the 4-40 rod strong enough to run the rudder without the sleeve? What are your opinions?

Thanks

Could be an alignment problem I have no problems with binding on mine, and the movement is very free and with no slop or play in rudder or elevevator. If I were to relplace it though I'd go with carbon rod. Also, If yours is the Mk1 kit without the tail-bracing watch for highspeed flutter in the elevator. It's a design flaw that caused a few losses and the bracing was added to the later kits.

Here's mine.........
