I have seen this question posted several times "what is the best monster truck". I have spent hours reading all of the post and it appears to come down to the HPI Savage X 4.6 or the Traxxas Revo. I want to buy an RC truck, but which one. I have enough money to buy either the HPI or Revo, not both. I want the best of both worlds-something I can bash and something that is fast and handles great. There is not a big difference between the price of a Revo 514.00 vs. HPI 485.00 with reverse module "Have to have reverse and easy cranking". I have experience with nitro motors so tuning is not a problem for me. Based on what is out there, what is the best RC truck for hard core playing. Thanks for your input.

It sometimes depends on what your local hobby shop carries. My lhs carries a lot of Traxxas parts but not much of anything else so if I would have gotten something besides a Traxxas, I would have to order all my parts which would take longer to get to me and would be more expensive. If you don't mind ordering parts and such then just research the Revo and Savage and choose which one best fits you.

T MAxx over a Savage? Are you kidding? TMaxx is far from the best and one of teh worst bashers you can get.. The revo in stock form will outhandle a a Savage anyday but for bashing in stock form a savage has that one. The revo will need some upgrades to get up to savage bashing status. Both are pretty fast. If you want the best of both worlds look at the Loci lst2 or Muggy. Both are tough as nails, fast and handle really well. The MGT is also a very tough truck and pretty quick. The MGT will be the biggest of them all. I dont think you can go wrong with either but get ready to upgrade teh revo if you plan to bash.

I get so damn tired of these threads. No offence to the original poster but people like twomanytoys is what ruins them, the revo doesn't need anything but a foc out of the box to get it up to bashing par IMO. I own both trucks and can say that the savage isn't the toughest thing out there, sure it's tuff but everyone runs their mouth about the revo being weak when in all reality it isn't. Both trucks have their pros and cons,on the revo one of the main cons is the rear skidplate and the reverse gears, with the savage the cons are the a-arms and shocks. Ziggy hit the nail on the head with the comment about what parts your lhs carries the most.

Im not knocking the revo. It has its weak points just like teh savage but in order to bash the revo like the savage it needs new a arms. All I said is it needs some upgrades. Chill out. people get so defensive around here.

The best monster truck is the truck you built and customized to your own personal preference. For some people it's an HPI, for some people it's a Traxxas, for some people it's AE...

I have both a Revo and a Savage. I got the Savage to start with cause everyone said it was the toughest basher, but ended up learning that it breaks just like all the rest just in different ways than others. The revo and savage are both good trucks. I am sure either one you go with you will like. You just need to figure out whats important in a monster truck for you. It took me a second purchase to figure out I rather have the revo for its handling and a few other things like its reverse. I think alot of people jump onto this Savage tough reputation thing and push it too far. Everytime, I go back to the savage forums and see people having some of the problems I encounted with my savage back in the day, I want to say I thought savages arnt suppose to break, then of course the hardcore savage guys love to make fun of the things that break on the revo. My hobby shop stocks both HPI and Traxxas so it didnt matter on that account what I got. I do prefer Traxxas customer service a little bit more than HPI. HPI was good overall in customer service, but a few times some shaddy things would be said on their part.

QFT.

As much as I hate to say it, chassis-wise, I think the Revo is about AS tough as the Savage. I run all my trucks HARD. I've had two T-maxxes and a Revo in addition to my two Savages (currently in little tiny pieces)

My Revo's biggest pain was the engine. Easily solved by a BB kit. Course, then again, I'm biased against 2.5s and 3.3s, simply because I believe they suck.

T-maxxes are junk. No argument. Period. Just flat junk.

MGT's are GOOD trucks. I personally would go for the 4.6 over the bigger one (7.0, is that what it is?) simply for aftermarket engine swappability. Plus, they're CHEAP!

LST has the chassis bending issue in stock form easily solved by the chassis brace, but otherwise very solid, fast, good-handling trucks.

As long as you stay away from the T-maxx, if you have the inclination toward the hobby to deal with the frustration of ANY nitro engine for a beginner, you will be happy with whatever you get. And before I get flamed by all the T-maxx owners...it's an inferior truck. It's a decade old. Get over it...you bought it because it was cheaper than the Revo, and you know it. Both of mine were terds.

One of the drawbacks with the savage I noticed was it was so heavy that it needed the extra strength. With all the weight you carry more force on impact when you hit things thus creating more potential damage. Its a never ended problem, the more weight the more strength needed so it adds even more weight then you need a bigger big block just to pull all that weight which just makes more weight heh. But if bigger trucks and larger motors are your thing then its not a bad truck. I agree with Thunderbird, I found my revo to be just as tough as my savage in many ways.

Im not saying either truck is better, but just from a short personal experience with my friends savage and my MGT..The savage had a roll over and broke a knuckle, The stock steering servo had stripped teeth from just driving around during break in, just after that the spur gear stripped while just driving around lightly. Hes sitting there thinking I turned him in the wrong direction when he bought this thing cause he sees me bashing my mgt hard and it rarely breaks. I don't know if its just his bad luck or what. It has kind of turned me against buying a savage, especially when im the one who has to work his truck, and its a PITA to pull out parts.

Elite...Seriously? A Savage won't just break a knuckle from a light rollover. over 13 gallons on my 1st Savage, not one broken knuckle, and servos don't just strip from just "Driving around".

You sound like a 4x4 guy trying to get a broken front axle warrantied because you were "just driving along, and BOOM!"

If your "Friend" would go to the Savage forum, he'd find out what was going wrong. Don't get me wrong, MGT's are good trucks...but not even a T-maxx will break
