I would give the SuperTurbo the slight edge as it has a trickle (topping charge) while the SuperNova does not.

I really don't think for general use you can go wrong with either. I was in the exact same position as you a few weeks back and ended up going with the Super Turbo. I am veyr happy with it and now wonder why I took so long deciding.

Just do it!

Anyone have problems running EITHER of these off of their car batteries ? I have heard that smaller "mower" batteries may not have enough amps to make these chargers peak charge correctly.... True ?

How many 4 cell receiver packs can you charge at one time on the Super Turbo. Just looking at it and I can only see one set of output jacks???

It is a single port charger, it can only handle on pack at a time.

The SuperNova does in fact trickle charge. The trickle function activates only in a preprogramed NiCD set-up.
After peak charging, 1/100 of the preprogramed pack capacity-the trickle rate, will commence. It is a pulse trickle. The pulses average out to 1/100 of the capacity.
Tim Marks from FMA emailed me with this info.

Just a little added info.

Jeff,

Your message to me on this subject:
Red, I was curious about this subject too. The destructions say it does it but gives no
explanation.
I emailed Tim Marks at FMA and promptly got a reply saying that it DOES indeed trickle
charge. The trickle charge function only activates when using the manual charge mode and
it's rate depends on the capacity of the pack.
If you have one of these chargers, peak a NiCD pack in the manual mode, check the mAs
put into the pack when charging is done, and leave the pack connected overnight. In the
morning check the mA numbers again and you'll find that they have increased.
Just thought you should know.

Best regards,
Jeff

I did as you suggested and found that the number, mAH input stayed the same as it was when the charger completed the peak charge. 48 hours later there was no change.

Also 1/100 trickle charge is not enough even to compensate for self discharge, much less bring all the cells in the pack to a full state of charge after peak. You will need at leastC/20 to top off the charge and then C/50 to sustain the level of charge.

I have seen no evidence that supports that there is any trickle charge in the Ni-Cd charge mode.

Here is what I'm trying now. Setting the Capacity to max (5000 mAh) this means the trickle if what we are being told is true should amount to 50 mAh.
I will note the mAh input reading at the time the pack peaks and then watch it and see if there is any change over the next few hours. I will also have a peak current recording digital voltmeter in the circuit to see if there is any indication of a trickle charge pulse.

Stay tuned.

Red, I don't use it's trickle function. I did however notice an increase in mA input #s when I left a pack connected for a few days.
I have several 6-700mah packs and a few 1100mah packs that I leave connected to wall-warts on timers. The smaller packs charge at 50mA for a little over an hour and the 1100s charge at 50mA for an hour every 12 hours.
I and many others are glad and lucky to have someone like you around to give us great ideas, (like the one above), and help expand our knowledge with the sharing of yours.

Thanks Red

I for one would really like to know the results of your testing-do share! I hope I wasn't just imagining things... ......

In any test where the results are not in line with what others find the test should be rerun.

Possibility: Maybe my unit, an early production one is different than current production.????

I'll certainly share what I find on this. Right now the recording meter is setting on 0000 mA after peak charge was terminated.

I think they may even share some of the same components. The SuperTurbo has a couple of features that the SuperNova does not have at this time. Both Units are very good quality at any price.

Have & tried these:

Novak Millennium - great small size - but must set a bunch of parameters

Astroflight 110D - not impressed with fit or finish and only 1 paramter to set (#of cells).

Graupner Duo Plus II - best of the lot - fully automatic on nicads, nimhs, and lead acids. It senses # of cells and proper charge current all fo which can be overridden. Has a port for a 4 cell receiver pack as well as the main port for regular charging that can all be done at one time. Also has cool functions like 3x charge and discharge for really good cycling.

Which one do I grab the most - the graupner - they all do the job equally well but the graupner is clearly the most versatile and best made unit I have.

I looked at the Graupner and concluded that it is the same
unit as the Schulz 6-330 but w/ weaker software.

I thought the 2nd fixed output output was a waste of time
(but that is just my opinion).

I ended up w/ the Orbit V6 for the same money and I think
its a more flexible unit.

Exactly the same conclusions I came to, that the 2nd port in some of these units are useless. Also, many of these chargers are expensive as well. I still say the best bang for the buck is the Super Turbo. In most cases, yo can get 2 Super Turbo's for the price of 1 of the more expensive German chargers and have redundancy. While like most, I don't want a wall full of chargers, but I still have not found the "total" charger in any price range.

Bottom line: Until Litco starts listening to their clients and makes an Alpha 4 that does 2 amps per port, peak nimh packs, and lithium packs, we have to compromise.

Does the Orbit Microlader 6.0 have "trickle charge... - 4/30/2002 10:36:21 AM

Hi, I wonder if the Orbit Microlader 6.0 has trickle charge. Does it have as many features as an American made Supernova or Super Turbo?

What's the best pricing here in the U.S.? I took a look at Orbit's website where the price is about Euro 170.00 without VAT, which equals to about USD 150.00 excluding shipping.

Thanks for your info.
