Status: offline 		And for those using YS engines, did you guys use the stock tank? Will it hold up to the pressurized fuel system? Mines getting real close to being finished, I may have gone a bit overboard with the weathering though, lol.

Status: offline 		You never know until you try and practice, trial and error lead to tried and true personal techniques and experience. Wipe it down in the direction of airflow to soften up the lines a bit but don't erase them...just drag the color across the surface and see how that looks. If you still don't like it wipe it all off and do it over. I clearcoat all of my planes with a rattlecan once finished with the paint, decals and abrasion/scratches weathering then do my washes and or airbrush weathering with acrylics. if I don't like it, an alchhol dampened rag takes it all away back to the clearcoat. Once finished and satisfied I do my clear fuelproofing to lock it all in.

Good start there anyway

Status: offline 		The biggest thing with weathering is color. Panel lines and rivets appear to be a darker shade of whatever color is on the plane. If you think about it, the plane is assembled, then painted. Any crud will collect in the joints and rivets, but it really just appears darken the joint, and maybe oil stain it. Wipe an oily finger across a flat paint, makes it look wet or darker.
A mustang wing has almost no panel lines or rivets showing since they are filled and sanded before paint.
Weathering is something that I know what should be done, but truly suck at actually doing. My planes always retain the factory fresh look

Status: offline 		I've ordered paint from Warbird Paints to refinish my Mustang in British Camo colors, mainly its so beat up from my many off field, gear up dead sticks from engine problems. All now finally resolved. With the DLE 20 it has way more power than needed. I need to do a bunch of patchings, filling etc the refinish. The flat will help hide the many imperfections of my many repairs. Here is the chosen paint scheme. At least it will be different.

Expect Warbird Colors paint to show up this week, so will start painting this coming weekend. Ordered markings from Callie Graphics. Should be here before I finish the painting.

Status: offline 		No power problems here. We used to live up near Saratoga Springs, NY. We would loose power if it got windy, or if there was an ice storm, or just because.

Status: offline 		I finally gave up on Warbird Colors. Since then Ive learned he had supplier and website problems. I ended up going to Sherwin-Williams and getting out door latex paint. Found out the have a cross reference for FS color codes. Only problem was I had to buy it by the quart. Then had to mix 2 parts water to 3 parts paint. Very then coats. Checked cg and wgt and couldn't tell any change of note .

I'm using a DLE 20 in my Mustang. Just repainted. Pictures above. The reason I repainted was because it was so beat up from multiple engine outs, sagging etc. Engine is equipped with pitts muffler. The engine would run ok on the ground, at first ok and then during flight start sagging, would not idle down the quit with power up. Took 4 months for me to figure out. Turned out it was vapor lock because muffler canister is under the rear mounted carb and not enough airflow in upper rear of cowling. Once I figured out problem fix didn't take much time. Installed air ducts from scoop under the spinner to upper rear cowl area and flang in front of air exit in lower rear cowl. This created high pressure area above carb and low pressure at exit drawing cool air over carb past the hot muffler and out. Since then no problems. Runs great, plenty of power. Here some pictures of the installation.

Yeah.......repairs.......always a lot of fun. The flying season is just about over here, so it's building and repair time.

A few months back, I got mine a little slow during a landing. She then dropped a wing and stalled resulting in a cartwheel. Damage to front and rear wingsaddles and a big punture on the top of the wing. Not a terrible lot of damage, but it will be a sustantial amount of work.

I sure wish you could get plans for ARF's. I need to fab up at least three wing ribs and having a set of plans would sure make my repair easier.

I couldn't get a set of plans from either Tower Hobbies or directly from TopFlite, but I did find a kit assembly manual http://manuals.hobbico.com/top/topa0110-manual.pdf

Hope it gives me a little help.

Sorry about the damage. I know all about that. I try not to fly if its too windy or gusty or too much cross wind. (chicken). Also I try to carry a little power all the way to the ground and land on the mains. It is possible to three point, but plane gets too slow for comfort. The wing and gear mounting area is not real strong and as with most warbirds every landing needs to be a good one or you will be spending a lot of time on repairs. So why do I have a bunch of warbirds? Because they are fun (mostly). Just a note.
The out door latex paint seems to be holding up ok and not affected by gasoline and hot oil out of exhaust.

Iv'e made some progress, but as they say life gets in the way sometimes I have the covering complete, and the nose painted, I still need to finish the pnl lines on the fuse, but it's starting to look like a P-51 again. I did get a set of the the Firepower 110 Gal drop tanks which should look pretty cool on it.

It has a Great Planes RimFire 120, a Castle ICE 100 ESC, Eflite retracts (Robart tail wheel) and I will be flying it on two 3 cell 5000 mah lipo's in series. I have the same setup in my TF Bonanza and at 13lbs it flies great, so the Mustang at 9.5lbs should go like a rocket.

More to follow, but it's at least at a stage where I can post a photo..
