One advise the stock retracts, will not hold up nothing but the grease landings. I reinforce my retracts bays with gorilla glue(after the plywood reinforces of course), just to make them as strong as posible. At the moment I have robart 608HD with the 3/8" robostruts and a Futaba S136G retract servo. All my electronics are run by a Li-Ion 7.4 2600mah with a regulator bringing the voltage to 6 volts.

The rudder low rate need to be increased in my opinion and the CG is at 5 1/2" and I fill confortable flying her like that, and the landings, are soo sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet when you pose the mains and then the tail settles down.

I have had my no so perfect landings with the robart and so far they're ok.

My humble opinion.

My P-51 came in the mail today!

I don't have an engine yet, but I'm considering the OS-91 Four Stroke. Has anyone tried this engine? If so, how does it balance?

Carl

Is the center of gravity right against the sides of the fuse? Is the plane nose heavy at all when taxing?(does the plane want to tip over?)

I got mine yesterday! What a great ARF the quality is amazing. So much nicer than the hangar 9 p-51. I owned the hangar 9 one until i had a bad dead stick landing

SEvans,

Yes, I saw your posts and you did not use the OS-91. I do appreciate you comments that it balances better with 90 size than 120 size engines.

Thanks,

Carl

So I got this plane a couple of weeks ago and I am finally almost finished. I am at the point of mounting the engine and fuel tank.

Is the fuel tank that came with the plane big enough for the OS 120 III with a pump (which is the engine I am putting in this plane) ??

When installing the fuel tank. I am using a 3 line system. One line is my fill line, the other is attached to pump on the engine and the last one is the vent line.
My question is what do I do with the vent line??? Does it just hang out the cowl?

My other question is what should I do with the fill line??? Does this hang out the cowl?

Run the other vent line to your muffler. Use the supplied fuel dot to plug your fill line, my fill line hangs out the bottom of the cowl.

very nice looking plane!

so i guess 6-channels are not enough?

hey Paps been looking at your post which I quoted 6 channels is indeed enough,HOWEVER,some R/Cers use an 'Aux channel' these days ,which is typically standard on todays computer programable transmitters that feature more than 7 channels-These systems as you might already be aware, allow INDIVIDUAL end point adjustments to EACH aileron and thats a good thing . Then there is the War Bird Pilots that like to drop objects from their pride and joy that would take more than 6 channels as well

Only built a couple IMAC ARFS but this one might be my first War Bird ARF

653R and 653L Robostruts.

Something to mention is that I locate the battery in the tailwheel hatch, and then I added 1 once to the tip of the tail to balance with the Saito 100 on the nose.

Hey drdoom,

Thanks for the advise. But my engine does not have a nipple on the muffler for the vent line unless I don't see it. The engine i am using is the OS 120 III surpass w/ pump.

So the question still stands what do I do with the vent line???

Thanks.

you don't need to run your vent to a muffler if you are using fuel pump system. No need for the pressure to tank. However, the vent line will also serve as the fuel overflow line in your 3 line fuel tank setup....so, you should leave it discretely hang from bottom or secure open air to bottom of cowl so you can see / catch extra fuel while filling...also, don't plug vent tube or your fuel tank won't work right.
Not sure if OS also has a crankcase vent, (which my saito 125 has) that also needs to stay open air if you have one.

I am using a OS120 pumped engine in my 60 size TF P-47 I epoxied a brass tube to the bottom of the cowl for the vent line to attach to it also serves as the overflow I can use a cup to catch the exess fuel when the tank is full.
on mine I just left it flush with the surface but you could also let it hang down and use some fuel tubing to direct the flow to your fuel catch as well

Awesome. Thanks everyone for helping with my fuel system.

bigtim,

Thanks for the advise and photo. I love the idea. Definitely going to attach a brass tube to my cowl.

Thanks,

Jonathan

about done with putting the plane together. very exciting.

I want to cover the elevator access hole. And I didn't see anything in the manual to cover or didn't find anything in the kit to cover it with.

Any ideas of what I should use to cover it, or where to get it??? I would like the same color.

If anyone wants a good deal on one of the 60 size top flite arf mustangs tower has two of them in their scratch and dent area for $210 each - no retracts but that would be a plus to me as I would use air retracts in this plane anyway.

I flew my TF P51 yesterday for the first time yesterday. The flight started well, but went sour immediatly after flipping the retract switch. Only one of them went up into the wheel wells so I tried bringing them back down and only one responded. I did all that I thought I could do with no luck. A buddy of mine suggested that I dive the plane hard and hit the switch and pull up hard. I did as suggested and sure enough the gear came back down but in that process, I lost one of the wheels and the axle. I flew around a bit and decided what course of action to take next with the help of my friends. We decided I would go with full flaps, no engine and with one wheel down decided to land on grass. Damage was a ripped out landing gear that broke the housing, one lost wheel/axle and the housing that supports the retract mechanism was also broken.

The plane flew very, very nice. I used no clicks of trim what-so-ever, none, zero, nada. I need to decide on what to do with the whole retract setup.

Oh and if anyone went with other wheels or the rubber variety and want to unload their stock wheels, please let me know. I need one!!

take care,

cruzomatic: I have a pair of wheels AND axles (but not the struts). They are the original ones that came with mine, and have not been mounted or used. You can have them all for $10 to cover packing & shipping. If intersted, e-mail me (I don't like PMs).

I went to the "Thunder Over Michigan" airshow today, at the Willow Run Airport near Detroit (same airport where Ford produced LARGE quantities of B-24s). Besides having 4 B-17s and 2 B-24s in the air ALL at the same time, and 4 P-47s at another time, the restored "Hurry Home Honey" was there, and this pic turned out fairly well:

I went to willow run also. It was a great show loved seeing all the WWII planes. Sad that there is really so few that still can fly. 9 p-47 in the world that can fly 4 of them where there.

With cost of 100LL being well of $5.00 dollars a gallon and those old birds lots of it per hour, even people of money are cringing at what it costs per hour to fly a war bird. There are still a lot of wwII era planes out there and every year some get restored and every year we lose a couple. Jack Roush just put back into the air a P-51B with malcomb hood. Was it at Williow Run this past weekend?

RC34074 Thanks for the tip, I just bought one from the scratch and dent. A few weeks ago I got hit by a tail wind and she went down, so with a perfect wing all I need is the fuselage and I will probably use the tail feathers. Other than that I should be all set.

Thanks again for the tip.

Actually, I'm thinking the high cost of insurance since 9/11 has more to do with it.

Do you mean this one? It was painted up as "Old Crow".
The C-130 is an active duty Ohio ANG aircraft, which is painted in WW II Mustang colors: red/ yellow checker nosed engine cowls, with red/ yellow banded spinners, D-Day stripes, and stars & bars WITHOUT the red bars. The unit it is from is a descendent of the 357th (Mustang) fighter group, hence the justification for the unusual markings
