I have been in this hobby for about 7 months and all of my planes are ARFs or I bought them built by someone else. I am now looking for a scale kit. These are the airplanes that I have to give you an idea of my expereince. World Models Sky Raider Mach II, Hobbico NexStar (converted to floats but have not flown off the water yet because I just finished installing the floats today), Great Planes Riot 3D, Texas RC Planes P-51D 40 sized, 1/5 scale 82" Scale Stinson Reliant with 25cc homelite weedeater engine (very scale slow flying). I am fairly sure that I want to build a Piper J3 Cub. I have narrowed down my search to the Carl Goldberg Anniversery Edition Piper J3 Cub 40 Kit and the Great planes Piper J3 Cub 40 Kit. I want 40 size because I have an engine that will work for both of these. I am going to make it the clipped wing version and use an O.S. .55AX. I want it to be as scale as possible. This is also my first kit. These are my Questions. Please respond if you have knowledge of these models. Thanks, Tpilot48.

Which is most scale?

Which is a better aerobat with the clipped wing?

Will my engine have enough power for it to do aerobatics with ease?

Which is easeier to build?

Which flys better?

Neither is particularly scale..they look like cubs..sorta. That is good enough for lots of folks that just want to go out and fly them. If you want to enter scale competions, then a lot of research and mods are necessary to get it close. The GP is probably closer to scale as it uses barn door ailerons vs the strip ailerons on the Goldberg

The cub is not particularly aerobatic with its flat bottom wing, however, it can be thrown around....and the clipped wing will certainly help..

That 55 will have lots of power. I've flown the goldberg with a puny .36 which still had some power left for fun stuff...

Both are traditional die cut lite ply and balsa, so I would expect that there is not a lot of difference in building (it was a long long time ago... )

Which flies better? All thinga being equal, they fly about the same. The builder can have a large influence on the flying qualities by builing straight and true, keeping the weight down; balancing it side to side as well as fore and aft, using decent quality control linkages that are slop free, etc etc etc. Paying attention to details during the building, finishing, and installing the servos can have a large effect on how the plane will fly....

Good luck, and have fun with it!!

Get the Sig 1/5 scale J-3. Excellent kit, all laser cut, very close scale outline. The plans allow for full span or clipped wing. The .55 will be plenty of power for the clipped wing version, but this plane (any J-3) screams for a 4-stroke. A Saito .62 would be perfect.

At any rate, you'll have a great looking model. It comes with wire gear, you have to wrap and solder the joints, but if you plan on scaling it out, Robart and Wm. Wallace both make a scale gear that fits perfectly. Cover it with Solartex, or do the traditional Koverall/dope. I've had this plane for over 4 years, it was my first scale build. I modified mine to the military L-4 version.

Thanks but I went to the web site and it didn't say anything about clipped wing possibilites.

Maybe I was looking at the wrong one, it would help if you could give me a link to the exact plane on the Sig web site.

Thanks again, Tpilot48

Here is the SIG clipped wing Cub. As mentioned, the SIG kits are builders kits, however you end up with a really nice plane. The Great Planes and Goldberg kits both build well, however I prefer the way the Goldberg flys. It looks a little more scale like in the air. Good Luck, Dave

I have the plans, I've built the kit. It's kit # RC82, the 1/5 scale "Anniversary" model. The only difference between the full span version and the clipped wing is to delete the two inboard bays on each wing, and shorten the struts (they attach in the same location on the wing). The plans show this and give you templates for the shorter struts as well as the standard ones.

The kit David linked to above is the 1/4 scale clipped wing. The 1/4 scale Sig Cub is an older design than the 1/5 scale, and the 1/4 full span and 1/4 clipped wing are separate kits for some reason. The 1/4 scale builds as a two-piece wing with the center section as part of one wing half, and attaches with forward locator pins and wing bolts at the rear of the wing. The 1/5 scale also has a two piece wing and the center section is part of the fuselage, the wings "plug in" the side of the center section and have a wing tube, although the struts are functional and required for flight.

It really boils down to how big a model you want. The 1/5 is too small for gasoline, and the 1/4 scale is good for glow or gas.

The Sig 1/5-scale Cub can be built either clipped wing or standard wing. It is all laser cut, has a two piece wing and very nice engineering. The SIG 1/4-scale and 1/6-scale Cubs are older, traditional kits that require a lot more build time.

The Goldberg Cub (built with a clipped wing) was my third kit. It was pretty easy to build and, if memory serves, the plans and instructions were fine. It flew well, too; something of a floater even with the clipped wing. I can't comment on the others that have been mentioned except to add that every Sig kit I've built has had a superb instruction book.

Someone told me that the fusalage on a Cub is hard to build straight. Is this true? Thanks,Tpilot48

Not if you know how to frame a box. Most of these kits are designed to build on top of the plans, kind of hard to go wrong. The 1/5 Sig's fuselage is mostly a laser-cut box truss with tabs that fit tightly together. Then there are formers that go on top of the box to create the turtledeck, and longerons that tie them together. Makes a very straight, very strong structure that resists twisting.

I'm new to posting on this site but I have been a long time reader. I am in the process of building the 60 size GP Cub and I wonder if you could explain to me why these kits don't look like Cubs.

I don't claim to be an expert on the Cub but it does look like one to me (it sure doesn't look like a P-51). I don't plan on entering any competitions with it but I still would like to believe that it is actually a "scale" model.

In what particular areas do you believe it is not scale?

I highly reccomend the Goldberg kit. Mine has so much airtime, that I will recover it for a third time! Mine is powered by a Saito 45 4-stroke and is a pleasure to fly. I also have a 1/4 scale Cub.
