went to the park this morning. conditions were perfect. i however was not. after all the excitement yesterday after learning my forward flips i get over confident and CRASH.

damage report:

tail boom
flybar
main shaft and feathering shaft
horizontal fin
main blades
main gear

right after the crash i went straight to the LHS for parts. . i now have the entire tail section with trexsev2 parts including: new metal tail gear case and metal tail rotor grips. . the exi head hold up on the crash very well...only the flybar was bent. so no need to replace the head just yet. final costs of new upgraded parts and supplies. 107 bucks!

got the crash on video and will post soon.

Awww Noob...bummer...at least you got it out of the way...I still have yet to crash mine. (knocks on wood/crosses fingers and toes/sacrafices small creature to heli gods)
The fun New Mexico Winds are back in the afternoons...so I did not get to fly at all yesterday...I ran out of time this morning and winds are already up around 15mph so I may not get any in today...tomorrow they are saying 25-30 mph with gusts up to 45mph and that is suppose to last a couple of days. I am hoping it is over by the weekend.

since both my blackhawk and exi are down i had to wipe off the dust from the HBK2. its still flys well. tail is locked solid with the esky hh gyro. that was the good ol days where it was easy to fix and tune the HBK2. i may be down but i'm not out. i always have the HBK2 to fly when i need it.

i finally fixed my exi 450. . it now have the trex tail case and grip. trex tail boom. the only left that is still exi is the frame and head. it was a real pain to change the pinion on it. i just finish the first test flight a little while ago. still have to trim the swash just a little and its ready for another adventure. i will post the pics in a few minutes

here is the new tail case and boom. i also modded the canopy so some air would help cool the motor.

update.

just installed carbon paddles on my exi 450. so now every blade on it is carbon.

i also found out why my tracking was off at high rpms. the flybar was bent but it was so hard to tell visually. i thought i had already replace it but i must of forgot during the rebuild. everything is now dead on. i actually prefer the frame to be metal rather than carbon. steel is stronger. i was thinking about upgrading the head to full cnc but didn't think i have to just yet. i took a real good look at the head and it looks fantastic. the only plastic on it was the seesaw and the blade grip.

i now know how to rebuild it. . which isn't that hard at all. i'm kinda glad that i crash it so it forces me to get to know this awesome heli
i think i'm ready for the trex kit. it might take me a while but i know what to do,

one last ride.

well looks like my exi 450 is done. crashed it this morning flying around in idle up. sun caught my eye and i lost orientation for a split second. when i saw it again i couldn't tell if its upside down. lol. it came down full throttle and smacked the ground. the entire frame was bent. all the servos survive the crash. those hs65mg are tough! they've been through 3 major crashes in idle up and they are still working flawless. the head was still intact. flybar and feathering shaft is probably bent. the entire tail made it through ok also. i was able to get one last vid before the crash. it was flying FANASTIC! so much power. it climbed like it was a rocket. this heli made me appreciate the power of a true 450.

I went to the LHS after the crash and picked up the trex 450SA. i just finished putting it together with the servos and gyro from the exi. I picked up the align 430XL motor for my new bird. at 3700kv and monster torque. i only spooled it up to see if all my setup was correct. only the intial spinup i goosed it all the way to see what kind of power i'm looking at. . (this was done on a bench) holy crap this thing is a freaking dynamite. it immediately chewed up the main gear. I replaced the main gear and reseated the motor for a better pinion and main gear mesh. tested it again after adjusting and it sounds beautiful. i also have the hobbywing 40a esc that i think i'll test to see if i can squeeze more power out of the motor.

anyways this will probably be my last post on the exi 450 . it was an awesome ride. i'll post the last vid on youtube later

i give my exi one last farewell and disassembled all the parts i might use later. now i have extra bearings and screws.

I just test flight the trex 450 for the first time today. It is ready. this is my very first 450 build that i put together myself. . took a total of 4 hours from setup to test flight. followed the manual to the letter. the cool part is that the manual was setup with the dx6 in the book. . that made it really easy to setup. i even measured all the links to the exact specifications like the book and sure enough it was perfect. tail is holding perfectly. the only thing i didn't follow by the book was the v curve for idle up. in the book they have it at 100 85 100. i changed to 100 90 100 but may increase it to 100 95 100 for even higher head speed.
